O SOGNO...AURA, CHE INTORNO SPIRI was written in December of 1783. While it has been thought that the Italian text, seemingly taken from a complete opera libretto, was written by Caterino MazzolĂ , most now consider the author to just be unknown. Much like a similar situation from Beethoven's later opera, FIDELIO, the tenor character in Mozart's aria finds himself in prison at night. In the recitative, after begging his captors (seemingly all women) to release him, he resigns himself to death, his only wish to see his beloved again one last time. In the aria that follows, he begs the breeze ("aura, che intorno spiri, sull'ali a lei che adoro") to carry his sighs to this woman. One of the greatest circus marches of all time, an authentic "screamer," this Fennell Edition incorporates those special touches that are the hallmarks of Fennell's march performances. Recorded on the classic SCREAMERS album by the Eastman Wind Ensemble, and on the Brain Recordings MARCH WORLD CD, Volume 4, this is a march that "never runs out of fresh ideas." Horns provide the storm, and the winds, the sunshine, and the heavens seem to echo with joy at each mood. Clever! | Concert Band

This orchestration has been completed by Arthur Luck. While the work is for solo voice and orchestra, the entire melody is written in the 1st violins, making it playable by orchestra alone also. | 14673 | D7E2BA6E-9A66-4B8C-A6B0-95A2BAC08B2C | 10100203 | Jack Tar March | JACK TAR is one of those rollicking marches set aptly in 6/8 time. In addition to the use of a repeat of the first strain prior to the Trio and a hornpipe in 2/4 replacing the usual "break" strain, Sousa added a boatswain's whistle and ship's bell to increase the nautical flavor suggested by the title. | Symphonic Band

Significant revisions were made by Schumann in 1851, and it is this version that was published in 1853. Where the original 1841 version is considered much lighter in texture, the 1851 revision is heavier and statelier. Clara Schumann, preferring the revised version of her husband's work, strenuously objected to the family friend Johannes Brahms' insistence that the original version, which he much preferred, also be published. Brahms did succeed in seeing the original version published in 1891. The symphony is considered a masterpiece, regardless of which version is performed, and remains a regular part of the orchestra repertoire. The original version premiered on December 12, 1841, by the Gewandhausorchester in Leipzig, Ferdinand David conducting. | 14675 | D7E45A76-8DC3-4B9A-BF41-75A80D478717 | SS69 | Lamento | Lamento, composed in 1961 for tuba and piano, is a brief but evocative elegy in 5/4 meter. The composer, having served in the Air Force during World War II, went on to study composition with Roy Harris, Howard Hanson, Ernst Krenek and William Schuman. Prolific in vocal and instrumental works, he received a number of commissions and coined the term "harmatonality" to describe his integration of both tonal and atonal musical form. | Tuba

| 14679 | D7F28C9C-873D-4EEF-AAB2-91DF0224352E | 20445237 | Air, Minuet, and Jig | This is a set of three Miniatures in contrasting mood and style. The Air is melodic with interesting harmony and moving inner parts. The Minuet is in the style of that typical 18th century dance, and the closing piece is in the style of an Irish Jig. This same piece has been published for some time as a Saxophone Quartet under the title of Three Miniatures, and has been quite frequently performed in Ohio contests. It is now available as a flute quartet and as a clarinet quartet under that same title. To avoid confusion, the title has been changed for this clarinet choir edition, and the instrumentation has been broadened to include 4 Bb soprano clarinets and bass Clarinet, with optional parts for alto, contra-alto and contra-bass clarinets.A very satisfying performance can be achieved with careful rehearsal of the notes, rhythms, style and dynamics. It is one of those piece that sounds more difficult than it really is! | Clarinet Choir | |
| 14680 | D7F67EE8-E46A-443E-BCCA-2095AAB1C565 | SS525 | Two Impressions | This two-movement impressionist piece by Russian composer Alexander von Kreisler contains a legato, dream-like Andante section followed by an articulate and frantic Allegro section. These contrasting movements make this piece a perfect fit for juries, contests, and recitals. Movements: I. Andante II. Allegro | Alto Sax |
