| 14642 | D789FB5C-A6EA-46EF-972C-A08F1762094B | M907002 | Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 for Band | The most well-known of the Elgar’s six marches, March No. 1 in D was completed in July 1901. Its central melody hails from before these dates, and as Elgar told a friend, “I’ve got a tune that will knock’em flat—knock’em flat!…a tune like that comes once in a lifetime….” It was premiered in October 1901 in Liverpool and was repeated in London a few days later. The result was sensational and had to be played a third time to restore order to the audience. In the United States, the trio section “Land of Hope and Glory” is often known simply as “Pomp and Circumstance” or as “The Graduation March” and is played as the processional tune at many high school and college graduation ceremonies. It was first played in 1905 at Yale University, where Elgar had been invited to attend commencement and receive an honorary doctorate of music. This edition for symphony band was transcribed by M.J. Retford and edited and revised by Alfred Reed. | Concert Band | |

Each selection was composed according to the criteria designed by Texas choral directors and commissioned by the Texas University Interscholastic League for use in its annual sight singing contest. These graded materials were created specifically for young musicians by recognized composers and comprise a valuable resource as they contain many of the problems encountered in sight singing. This collection can be used effectively as a supplement to the daily instructional sight singing program after an approved system (movable “do”, fixed “do” or numbers) and a rhythm system are established within the choral curriculum. | TB

Each movement is named after one of the old Colchester pubs: 1. "The Rose and Crown" (filled with bright, sonorous chords, energetic rhythmic patterns, and constantly changing and fluctuating motives), 2. "The Marquis of Granby" (a name associated with distant, faded aristocracy, it is a stately, chorale-like movement with somber, plaintive themes), 3. "The Dragoon" (brings forth the sounds of battle with dissonant, clashing harmonies, agitated rhythms and fragmented melodies), and 4. "The Red Lion" (a name intimating royalty and nobility, it is a resonant fugue, propelled forward with motoric motion and a rapid, spinning fugue theme. | Brass Quintet
