The transcendent and serene motet is perhaps the best-known setting of the short Catholic Eucharistic chant, and it was Mozart's first effort at a sacred work since his unfinished Mass in C minor from 1781 while also being his final completed sacred prior to his Requiem, which remained unfinished at his death later that same year. It is now in the British Museum (Royal Appendix MS 59-62). The MS contains forty-four dance-tunes, besides a number of Italian songs. The dance-music is akin in style to that described in Thoinot Arbeau's Orchesographie (1588), and to the work of Claude Gervaise and Estienne du Tertre, published by Attaignant in the mid-sixteenth century, and reprinted in modern times by M. Henri Expert in one of the volumes of his valuable collection Les maltres musiciens de la renaissance frangaise. Nos. 2, 4 and 6, which appear in the MS with the signature C, i.e., in duple time have been 'rearranged in triple time', according to the principle laid down by Arbeau in the Orchesographie (English translation, page 63). The original MSS are unbarred and without any indications of pace, phrasing or dynamics. These points of interpretation are best left to the taste of individual performers, conductors and teachers, and the few suggestions here made are only offered for the use of otherwise unassisted students. After his London debut, the playwright and music critique George Bernard Shaw wrote in his review that Sarasate “left criticism gasping miles behind him.” Shaw also declared that there were many composers of music for the violin; there were but few composers like Sarasate for violin music. His vast concert repertory included many works written for and dedicated to him by Bruch, Saint-Saëns, Wieniawski, Dvorak and many others. He performed his own works in an inimitable, brilliant and charming manner. His contemporaries marveled at his perfect intonation and stunning rhythmic acuity. His bowing technique was the pride of the French School of violin playing. The works presented in this volume are among his finest. All are based on Spanish popular music and are a virtuosic set for violin and piano. They are and have been in virtually every great violinist's repertory.
