Niccolò Paganini gave the premiere performance of his Second Violin Concerto at La Scala in Milan, 1827. The success of the performance was such that the last movement of the concerto was repeated. The subtitle of this movement is “LA CAMPANELLA” (The little bell) because of the sound the harmonics in this work produce. Paganini known for his pyrotechnics uses double harmonics and left hand pizzicato lavishly in this movement. Moto Perpetuo is one of Paganini’s most popular works. Dozens of transcriptions exist for a variety of instruments, from marimba to double bass, as well as for orchestra, where all first violins play the solo part. The 3,032 sixteenth notes in this four-minute composition require formidable skill and endurance from the performer. | Violin, Piano

Commemorative Fanfare | The composer writes about his fanfare for string orchestra and snare drum: "When Maestro Leonard Slatkin (in collaboration with the John and June Hechinger Foundation) commissioned me to compose a fanfare to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Kennedy Center, I was not only honored, but I also felt very sentimental. ... (I)t was not written to exhibit every innovative device available to the composer, nor to solve musical explorations of global dimensions, but to be a brief, festive, robust, exciting, and joyful celebrations for the audience. Many of my colleagues who know my fondness for intricate musical patterns asked how I could compose a fanfare using irregular rhythms typical to me. I must admit that I restrained myself and remained faithful to the basic idea of the fanfare. If the audience finds itself to be in a joyful and celebratory mood, then I feel that I shall have been successful." | String Orchestra and Snare Drum

Respighi introduced Rossini’s score to the impresario Sergei Diaghilev, whose Ballets Russes premiered the ballet in London on June, 5, 1919 to an eagerly awaiting audience. British conductor Malcolm Sargent took Respighi's orchestration and compiled the work into a suite, which has been edited by Nancy Bradburd in this edition. | 158 | 01EDD514-4384-4D03-B80C-C0B134615F19 | SO108C | O Silent, Holy Night | After the lush opening bars, this medley opens with the whispered melody of Silent Night over pizzicato arpeggios and a leisurely shuffling bass. A seamless transition to 6/8 lifts us swiftly into the strains of “Oh Holy Night,” where the melody is passed among every voice, gradually building to a climax to the end, where the final bars of the arrangement return to the reverent silence of the opening. This piece is the perfect addition where that moment of repose in a holiday program is just the thing you’re looking for. | String Orchestra

Originally a collaboration between de Falla, the flamenco dancer Pastora Imperio, and librettist María Martínez Sierra, the ballet follows Candela, a recent widow who attempts to dispel her abusive late husband’s ghost so she can remarry. The original version of the ballet was not well-received, so de Falla dialed back the Roma cultural elements prominent in the original version and expanded the size of the orchestra to appeal to contemporary audiences. The 1924 version premiered in Paris on May 1925. Reprint Edition.
