Grainger produced at least six versions of this folk tune arrangement of two contrasting Irish Reels ("Temple Hill" and "Molly on the Shore"), of which this version for string orchestra or string quartet, written in 1907, was the first. A string count of 8-8-5-5-5 is included in the set.String Orchestra (8-8-5-5-5 in set)

IntermedioSpanish conductor and composer Gerónimo Giménez (1854-1923) was dedicated to writing zarzuelas, the populist Spanish genre of lyric-dramatic one-act operas popular at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. He wrote La Boda de Luis Alonso (The Wedding of Luis Alonso) in 1896, following the success of his 1896 zarzuela El Baile de Luis Alonso (Luis Alonso's Dance), with La Boda de Luis Alonso premiering at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid on January 27, 1897. The Intermedio (Intermezzo) from La Boda de Luis Alonso was written for performance between scenes and is a medley of several traditional dances, including a seguidilla that Falla later included in El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Corned Hat). It is certainly the best-known of Giménez' work and is likely the most famed excerpt to come from the zarzuela tradition. At the time of its composition from 1909 to 1911, he had recently undergone surgery for throat cancer. Sibelius himself described it as a "psychological symphony." Defying the extroverted romanticism of the European symphonic tradition, the work premiered on April 3, 1911, with the Philharmonia Society performing under the direction of the composer. It contains depictions of torture, murder and suicide, as well as some of Giacomo Puccini’s best-known lyrical arias. With a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, based on a play by French playwright Victorien Sardou. The opera was an immediate success with the public upon its premiere in 1900, and its characters continue to fascinate both performers and audiences as the work remains one of the most frequently performed operas. In the Act I aria Recondita armonia, the painter Cavaradossi compares the portrait of Mary Magdalene on which he is working to his sweetheart Tosca.
