They were not conceived of as a cycle, with each song only connected by the poet Friedrich Rückert and the themes. But they were published together, first as SIEBEN LIEDER AUS LETZTER ZEIT (SEVEN SONGS OF LATTER DAYS) with two additional Mahler songs, then with only the five songs. They have simply come to be known as RÜCKERT-LIEDER and are now most frequently performed together, although Mahler did set other Rückert poems aside from these five. The second song, ICH ATMET’ EINEN LINDEN DUFT! (I BREATHED A DELICATE FRAGRANCE), transposed to the key of F in this version for high voice, paints an evocative summertime scene. I:19) | Scholars have conjectured that Franz Joseph Haydn’s (1732-1809) SYMPHONY NO. 19 IN D MAJOR (Hob. 1:19) was composed between 1757 and 1761, during his tenure as Kapellmeister for Count Karl Joseph of Morzin. This case has been made due to the light scoring and stylistic elements indicative of the Italian overture. As is typical of other symphonies from this period, it is constructed in three movements. The work opens with a series of extended static sonorities derived from overtone construction. These sonorities, becoming increasingly dynamic, lead to a succession of sharply contrasted, highly inflected block events. A fluid chordal structure concludes the work. | 3333 4331 Pc Pno Str | |
