A great deal of Lecuona’s music was first introduced to American audiences by Desi Arnaz, a fellow Cuban and Lucille Ball’s spouse. Andalucía (Suite Espagnole) was originally composed by Ernesto Lecuona for solo piano. This colorful and vibrant arrangement of the Malagueña, the sixth and final movement of the suite features driving Latin rhythms that create a concert piece that’s truly exciting.1.1.2.1: 3Sax: 2.3.2.0: Timp.Perc(3): Pno(opt): Hp: Str(9.8.7.6.5)

14818DA225D42-E425-4ABD-A4B8-D9394CB0CEA3A149802Orfeo ed Euridice, No. 28: Dance of the Furies (from Wq. 41)A radical innovation when it first appeared in 1762, Christoph Willibald Gluck’s (1714-1787) dramatic opera based on the Greek myth of Orpheus resurfaced in a variety of later editions at the hand of its composer and later, during the Romantic period, advanced by musical figures such as Berlioz and Liszt. Set to an Italian libretto by Ranieri de’ Calzabigi, ORFEO ED EURIDICE (ORPHEUS AND EURYDICE) premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna on October 5, 1762 with Empress Maria Theresa in attendance. Gluck constructed a second version (Wq. 41, retitled as ORPHÉE ET EURYDICE) twelve years later for the Académie Royale de Musique in Paris with a French libretto translated by Pierre-Louis Moline. In this 1774 version, Act 2, Scene 1 concludes with the DANCE OF THE FURIES after their refusal to let him into the underworld has been overcome by his sweet singing. This Kalmus edition by Alfred Dörffel is based on the 1859 version by Hector Berlioz, which combines both the Vienna and Paris versions. Instrumentation: 0.2.0.1: 2.0.0.0: Str (4.4.3.3.3 in set).
