The work is dedicated to Jill Crooker. The poems are set in their original classical Latin and a classical Latin pronunciation (not church Latin) should be used when performing the work. The text is used verbatim although elisions are not used in the musical setting. The first song, Iam ver egelidos, is a setting of a poem about travel and the arrival of spring. The second song, Odi et amo, is a brief musing on the perplexing nature of love.Voice, Piano

This work is a tribute to the masters of the Baroque Period, while the harmonies are lush and romantic. There is no position work involved (except for basses), which allows your students to work on blend, ensemble and tone production. There is a brief cadenza for the soloist (which can be omitted if desired).Solo Violin, Flute or Oboe with String Orchestra

Adolf ?ech conducted the premiere. Dvo?ák had only recently become introduced to Fritz Simrock by Johannes Brahms, but had already become displeased with several of his new publisher's business practices, including releasing older works with high opus numbers, implying they were new. Dvo?ák offered this work, recently written, to Simrock with a somewhat earlier number as part of his response.

This arrangement for double woodwind quintet was written by Graham Sheen, teacher, arranger and former principal bassoonist of both the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.

Ravel said of the work, "Do not attach any importance to the title. I chose it only for its euphonious qualities. Do not dramatize it. It is not a funeral lament for a dead child, but rather an evocation of the pavane [a stately, 16th-century Spanish court dance] which could have been danced by such a little princess as painted by Velázquez." This version for horn and piano has been transcribed by Alfred Piguet. Reprint edition.Horn and Piano

As a world premiere with Shaw unfortunately never materialized, Foss later gave the manuscript to Richard Stoltzman just before his death 60 years later. Though the two concertized together for many years, a performance of the Elegy would not yet come to pass. Finally, Stoltzman edited this beautiful work and presented the world premiere transcription for clarinet and piano in 2014, unveiling this previously unknown Foss gem to audiences and clarinetists for the first time. Full orchestra materials are also available on rental from the publisher, as well as a piano reduction.Clarinet Solo: 2.2.0.2: 2.2.1.0: Timp.Perc(1): Str
