The first performance took place on May 19 at the Kärntnertortheater. Offering to intervene for the tenant farmer Antonio, Marquis of Boisfleury tries to beguile his daughter Linda, who is herself in love with a Viscount posing as a poor artist named Carlo. Escaping her seducer to a place of residence in Paris provided by the now-revealed Viscount, she later discovers that he will marry another woman. Her ensuing madness is only cured when the wedding is called off and he admits his love for her. Finding a gift of flowers from Carlo, she sings her opening Act I aria, O LUCE DI QUEST’ ANIMA (OH GUIDING STAR OF LOVE). Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp. 14504D55A16AF-D399-4E86-ADF4-B8A8C9D0366150250165Beating the Rapids: from Buffalo River SuiteA spirited, almost fiddle tune begins our journey down the river, with cascading 8th notes in each section. The drama builds with a modulation to D, with figures representing the whitewater rush. The G major section returns, leading to another modulation to C and a beautiful viola solo, backed by the other principal strings. The entire orchestra plays the more romantic and restful theme with our successful trip down the river to camp. There is minimal 3rd position for Violin 1 only, and the soloists will also have to shift.String Orchestra

There are several signposts that serve to guide the listener on a pilgrimage to J. S. Bach. The melody line of the refrain, presented in the first three measures, contains three quarters of the "B-A-C-H motive" (B-flat, A, C). The chorale at the end, including the "H" (B-natural) completes the pilgrimage. Commissioned and recorded by Delores Stevens.Solo Piano
14512D5903082-4E8C-4D94-9FAC-AEA440DF7BDB50250208Whole Bow WaltzWhole Bow Waltz is a fun way to teach orchestra students some much-needed bow management skills. In this level 1.5 piece in G Major, the waltz melody includes plenty of long notes so students learn to control bow speed and pressure. In addition, playing at the frog is encouraged in many measures so students can be in the right part of their bows when whole bows are needed. All sections get a turn to play the melody, and the students will enjoy listening for melodic variations as it moves from one section to another. The happy waltz melody becomes somewhat menacing and mysterious as B flats are introduced in one variation. For a fun challenge near the end of the piece, the students learn to play progressively longer notes together. Whole Bow Waltz is sure to be a hit with students and audiences alike.String Orchestra

Le spectre de la rose (original key of B)The song cycle LES NUITS D’ETE (SUMMER NIGHTS) is a setting of six poems by composer Hector Berlioz' (1803-1869) neighbor and friend, Théophile Gautier. The text deals in themes of love in all its facets, progressing from youthful innocence to loss and renewal. Originally composed in 1841 for solo vocalist and piano, Berlioz completed orchestration of each of the six songs in 1856. While regrettably neglected for many years, this song cycle was rediscovered in the 20th century and has become one of the composer's most popular works. The songs in the original keys (1. A; 2. B; 3. F minor; 4. F-sharp; 5. D; 6. F) are available from the publisher both as a complete set (A2573) and individually. Robert Sutherland has edited five of the songs in the cycle and has transposed each in multiple keys to expand the work to more vocalists. Songs completed by Robert Sutherland: 1. Villanelle (E, F, and G), 4. Absence (Db, D, Eb, and E), 5. Au Cimetie?re, Clair de lune (Bb, B, and C), and 6. L'lle inconnue (D, Eb, and E). A transposition of 2. Le Spectre de la rose to D and a transposition of 3. Sur les Lagunes to g minor is also available from the publisher. Le spectre de la rose (The Ghost of the Rose) tells of a girl's dreams of the ghost of the rose she had worn to a ball the previous day. The rose has died and ascended to paradise; to have died on the girl's breast was a fate that kings might envy. One of Strauss’s most expansive non-operatic works, the score requires a massive ensemble of 125 musicians. The composition depicts a journey through the Alps, portraying the experience from daybreak to nightfall as one climbs the mountain. AN ALPINE SYMPHONY premiered in Berlin on October 28, 1915. 14517D59E5BA8-2D99-47CB-9883-FE02CA763BBFA930590Symphonies of Wind Instruments (1920)Two years after the death of Claude Debussy, Stravinsky was asked by La Revue Musicale to write a piece in his memory which would appear in a book including tributes by other composers as well. He was delighted to be asked, and in 1959, he explained that enthusiasm, saying “the musicians of my generation and I myself owe the most to Debussy.” The piece he submitted was the Chorale (arranged for piano solo), which concludes the work. The music of the Symphonies draws on Russian folk elements, and is constructed of "contrasting episodes at three different yet related tempos." The chorale which concludes the piece was originally published in the magazine La Revue musicale in an edition entitled Le Tombeau de Claude Debussy, which included short pieces from several composers, including Maurice Ravel and Manuel de Falla, dedicated to Debussy's memory. It appeared as a piano score in the Tombeau. Instrumentation: 3(3dPicc)+Afl.2+1.2+Acl.3(3dCbsn): 4.3.3.1.3(3dPicc)+Afl.2+1.2+Acl.3(3dCbsn): 4.3.3.1
