For his subject, he selected five of the more than four hundred "Kindertodtenlieder" penned by Friedrich Rückert following the deaths of two of his children. Completed shortly after the birth of his daughter Maria, who later succumbed to scarlet fever, the work has commonly been viewed in light of the composer’s own experience with impending mortality and bereavement. The premiere took place in Vienna on January 29, 1905, Mahler conducting, with Friedrich Weidemann performing the solo part. The solo part is often performed by either mezzo-soprano or baritone. Despite these words by Clara Schumann, her husband did not consider his 1839 Christmas gift of these three romances to be "good or worthy enough" of her. All the same, these romances, originally written for oboe and piano, became one of Schumann's most successful compositions. | Flute, Piano

Comprised of 15 songs total by the end, each sets folktale texts, as published by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano, to music with piano accompaniment, though some also have orchestral accompaniment. The fourth song, WER HAT DIES LIEDLEIN ERDACHT? (WHO MADE UP THIS LITTLE SONG?), portrays a pastoral scene involving a lover’s admiration for an innkeeper’s daughter. The song concludes by reflecting on its own whimsical origins, having been flown across the water by a trio of geese. This Kalmus edition is transposed to E-flat major for medium voice. The music begins as if in a mist, with musical fragments gradually being heard, and various images being created. These fragments eventually join to form longer themes that move from sorrow to strength to pride. In the end, a solemn hymn is heard that serves as a benediction with one last call from the trumpet. | Concert Band
