Marketing CopyKINDERTOTENLIEDER (SONGS ON THE DEATH OF CHILDREN) is an orchestral song cycle by Gustav Mahler (1860-1911), written between 1901 and 1904. For his subject, he selected five of the more than four hundred "Kindertodtenlieder" penned by Friedrich Rückert following the deaths of two of his children. Completed shortly after the birth of his daughter Maria, who later succumbed to scarlet fever, the work has commonly been viewed in light of the composer’s own experience with impending mortality and bereavement. The premiere took place in Vienna on January 29, 1905, Mahler conducting, with Friedrich Weidemann performing the solo part. The solo part is often performed by either mezzo-soprano or baritone.
