Two Catullus Songs (1999) is a set of two settings of two poems by the Ancient Roman poet Gaius Valerius Catullus (84?–54? BC). The work is dedicated to Jill Crooker. The poems are set in their original classical Latin and a classical Latin pronunciation (not church Latin) should be used when performing the work. The text is used verbatim although elisions are not used in the musical setting. The first song, Iam ver egelidos, is a setting of a poem about travel and the arrival of spring. The second song, Odi et amo, is a brief musing on the perplexing nature of love.
