The composer's early piano works, such as this, reflect his most delicate and poetical composition. This publication of the Nocturne for concert band has been faithfully scored by Alfred Reed in an attempt to recreate the warm, dreamy colors inherent in the original piece.Concert Band

C77EE188-68CE-44A4-B293-CA4F2543FF9FM253991Much Ado About Nothing, Suite for Violin and Piano, Op. 11When Max Reinhardt was engaged to direct a German language production of Shakespeare’s MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING at the Vienna Volksbühne in 1918, he asked Korngold to compose the incidental music. The production, under the German title VIEL LÄRMEN UM NICHTS did not open until May 6, 1920 at the Schönbrunn Palace Theater; in the pit the composer led members of the Vienna Philharmonic, performing no less than 18 pieces of music. In the meantime, due to the tardy premiere of the play, Korngold had already extracted this five-movement orchestral suite which garnered much praise when performed three months before the play’s opening night. The five movements included: 1. the Overture; 2. Scene in the Bridal Chamber; 3. Holzapfel und Schlehwein (a mock-serious scene); 4. Intermezzo (Garden Scene); and 5. Hornpipe. When the play moved to Vienna’s Burgtheater (more than 80 performances) and later to the Rezidenz Theater in Munich, the music continued to attract much attention. Demand for the music was such that Korngold arranged the suite into versions for violin and piano (four pieces), and for solo piano (three pieces). German composer-arranger Leo Artok (1885-1935) also arranged the most popular three items (Hornpipe, Garden Scene and In the Bridal Chamber) for small orchestra, which were then published by Schott in 1926. All editions noted above are available from the publisher. This reprint of the original Schott edition is the collection of four pieces for violin with piano accompaniment accessible by any diligent student.Violin and Piano
C7814284-F34D-4AFC-8DE2-615B08327E08X683301Extant 1B for Tenor Saxophone Solo and Seven PlayersThe first movement of Extant was originally composed as a 10th anniversary gift for the Los Angeles-based new music ensemble, Xtet; I joined the group as composer and conductor in the late-80s. The piece was expanded to a 2-movement concerto for bassoon and eight players, featuring Xtet composer/bassoonist John Steinmetz, on a commission from the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition at Brigham Young University, and recorded on Albany Records. Fast forward to November 2021 when I did a residency at the University of Nevada Las Vegas; the faculty saxophonist, Shawna Pennock, suggested that this first movement would work well for tenor sax. Hence, Extant 1B for tenor saxophone and seven players. My thanks to Shawna for this most excellent idea. Extant 1B was premiered at UNLV on November 15, 2021 with Shawna Pennock soloist and the Nextet Chamber Players conducted by Tim Warren. - Donald Crockett.Tenor Sax Solo, Flute, Clarinet/Bass Clarinet, Percussion, Harp, Violin, Viola, Violoncello

C79CDA9D-9911-4EE7-81D6-3B72FF048491A912402The Music Makers, Op. 69 for Contralto Solo, Chorus, and OrchestraEdward Elgar (1857-1934) began work on The Music Makers, Op. 69, a work for solo contralto, mixed chorus, and orchestra, in 1903 and completing it in 1912. It sets the entirety of Ode by Arthur O'Shaughnessy to music, a text that likely appealed to Elgar's sense of an artist's life and relationship to society. (The text begins with, "We are the music makers, And we are the dreamers of dreams, Wandering by lone sea-breakers, And sitting by desolate streams.") Perhaps given the kinship he felt to the text, Elgar's music is almost autobiographical in ways, quoting music from some of his own most popular works, including: The Dream of Gerontius, the Violin Concerto, "sea-breakers" from Sea Pictures, "Nimrod" from the Enigma Variations, Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2, the Violin Concerto, Rule, Britannia, and La Marseillaise. Despite the many quotations, most of the music is original. It premiered on October 1st, 1912 at the Birmingham Festival, with Muriel Foster singing the alto solo, and Elgar himself conducting the Festival Chorus and Orchestra. This vocal score includes piano accompaniment for rehearsal or performance.Alto Solo, Mixed Chorus: 2+Picc.2+EH.2+BCl.2+CBsn: 4.3.3.1: Timp.Perc(2-3): Hp(2).Org: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set)

C7A30266-052F-4507-9809-10E4E350C7B9A233902Rigoletto (complete)Based on the 1832 play LE ROI S'AMUSE by Victor Hugo, Guiseppe Verdi’s (1812-1901) RIGOLETTO was the composer’s sixteenth entry into the genre and is widely considered one of the first operatic masterpieces of his career. Despite serious initial problems with the Austrian censors who had control over northern Italian theaters at the time, the tragic tale of the licentious Duke of Mantua, his hunch-backed jester Rigoletto, and Rigoletto's beloved daughter Gilda was triumphantly premiered on March 11, 1851 to a sold-out La Fenice Opera House under the direction of Gaetano Mares. The work proved so popular that the aria “La donna è mobile” was sung in the streets the morning after its debut. Rigoletto has remained as popular with audiences today as it was at its debut. While initially critics condemned the work for its tragically dark plot partnered with what they claimed was “popular” but insubstantial music, the opera has since gained overwhelming positive reception. Igor Stranvinsky even remarked, “… there is more substance and feeling [in the aria “La donna è mobile”] than in the whole of Wagner’s Ring Cycle.”2d1, 2, 2, 2 - 4, 2, 3, 1, timp, perc, str (2.2.1.1.1)

C7A7007A-F9E6-44CD-936D-BBCB89BAE036SO114CAlbinoni's AdagioThis Adagio was part of a Sonata a tre in G minor by Tomaso Albinoni, without opus number; the only remaining parts are that of the figured bass and two first violin fragments in manuscript form. The part of the figured bass and the two fragments were sent by the State Library of Dresden to Mr. Remo Giazotto soon after the end of the Second World War, after the thematic index of Albinoni's works had already been prepared and published. The first move towards the reconstruction of the work was provided by the realization of the figured bass, to which a brief introduction was added. Using this figured bass and the two thematic elements, the whole was pieced together and composed in full accordance with the harmonic tissue suggested by the figured bass.String Orchestra with rehearsal Piano
