Program Notes
Ange de Flamme et de Glace is the fourth in an ongoing series of works based on the poetry of the notorious and precocious teen-ager, Arthur Rimbaud. Its central setting is of Barbare--Rimbaud at his most explosive, visionary and ambivalent. In its "flag of bleeding meat up silk of seas", its "white tears, boiling", Surrealism would later take root. The surrounding brief settings are, like Barbare, gleaned from the Illuminations. Ange received its premiere in 1990 in Cincinnati with Randall Gremillion, baritone, and was conducted by Gerhard Samuel.
