13641C7ABD8A0-131A-4117-9FCB-2D1DADCB5F39R01584Symphony No. 9: Revival (A Choral Symphony)"The Revival", commissioned to open the 2017 Shanghai International Music Festival, became the composer’s ninth symphony. As usual in Gong’s works, the choral symphony was composed in the Classical-Romantic tradition with a heavy blend of Chinese folk and traditional material. The symphony consists of five movements, which include a majestic Overture, a song for Baritone ("The Youth"), a song for tenor ("The Workers"), a song for soprano ("Twilight") and a grandiose choral finale ("The Dream").SATB and Children's Choruses: 2+1.3.3.3: 6.3.3.1: Timp.Perc(4).Clst.Hp: Str 16.14.12.10.8 min.)

With a libretto written by Eugène Cormon and Michel Carré, it received its premiere in Paris at the Theatre Lyrique on September 30, 1863. It ran for eighteen performances, then was not performed again until after the composer's passing. Comprised of 15 songs total by the end, each sets folktale texts, as published by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano, to music with piano accompaniment, though some also have orchestral accompaniment. The tenth song, LOB DES HOHEN VERSTANDES (IN PRAISE OF HIGH INTELLECT), is a humorous song depicting a singing competition between a cuckoo and a nightingale. The judge, who happens to be a donkey, obviously favors the cuckoo. This Kalmus edition is transposed to the key of C major for low voice. Each selection was composed according to the criteria designed by Texas choral directors and commissioned by the Texas University Interscholastic League for use in its annual sight singing contest. These graded materials were created specifically for young musicians by recognized composers and comprise a valuable resource as they contain many of the problems encountered in sight singing. This collection can be used effectively as a supplement to the daily instructional sight singing program after an approved system (movable “do”, fixed “do” or numbers) and a rhythm system are established within the choral curriculum.SAB

His alarm clock is the first violins and their harsh trill. Basses use half, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions, set up logically and with fingerings provided. Violins and violas learn high and low chromatic fingerings and will improve their note-reading skills. Violins also have a flashy glissando into third position. Tremolo and left-hand pizzicato are introduced before the walrus completes his clumsy waltz around the room and falls gently back to sleep.String Orchestra

13653C7E46B92-995C-4D69-8ABC-24370460FF53EBM0610337Symphony No. 2: OraclesWilliam Bolcom's SYMPHONY No. 2, written to fulfill the requirements for his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Stanford University, reveal over sixty years later, the emergence of the composer's present style of writing, with its underpinnings of chromaticism, despite the atmosphere of the time insisting that tonality was dead. Influenced by Sibelius' SYMPHONY No. 7 in its overall plan and brevity, the mystical subtitle "Oracles" was drawn from Bolcom's personal experience. And despite the dismissiveness of key centers at the time, the composer felt no better expression of the epiphany he'd felt than the resolution in C Major that occurs at the end of the symphony. 13654C7E4CD95-BC09-4FAF-B946-ED3B2E9655EAM803790Hansel and Gretel Prelude for String OrchestraThe story of Hansel and Gretel is a familiar one. The fairy tales written by Jakob Ludwig and Wilhelm Karl Grimm have become classics of literature that children around the world are taught from and about. This prelude, from Humperdinck's famous opera, requires great sensitivity and maturity of tone. William Ryden has removed the original 'Dream' sequence and substituted the 'Evening Prayer' in this adaptation. There are solo passages for both first and second violins, viola, and cello.String Orchestra
