| 13669 | C80E6E29-0B01-4B02-89DC-6BD21746C9D3 | A744690 | Adagio in E Major, K. 261 | It is widely believed that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) wrote the Adagio in E major, K. 261 in or around 1776 as a replacement for the second movement of his Violin Concerto No. 5 in A, K. 219. The likely reason for the replacement is a complaint by Italian violinist Antonio Brunetti, recently brought to the Salzburg court orchestra by the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg, Heironymus Colloredo, that the original movements was "too artificial," according to a letter from Leopold Mozart. The Mozarts, finding Brunetti boorish and morally objectionable, also would have thought his complaint regarding the "artificial" second movement to confirm their worst opinions of Italian taste. Still, young Mozart wrote the replacement Adagio as requested, and its serene beauty in sonata form remains a fine example of his lyrical ability. | 13671 | C81712B2-73CE-4C73-8AC1-0598C77104C4 | M272991 | Litanei, Op. 10, No. 3 | Arnold Schönberg (1874-1951) composed his String Quartet No. 2, Op. 10 in 1908 during a troubled time in his life. While the work includes the dedication "to my wife," his wife Mathilde was engaged in an affair with their friend, the artist Richard Gerstl. The work is unusual in that the third and fourth movements include a soprano soloist, singing a setting of poems by Stefan George. The third movement, Litanei (Litany), functions as a prayer, with the singer listing the ways that they have been worn down by their love for another and imploring at the end that their love be taken away from them so that they may be happy. This reduction for voice and piano was completed by Schönberg's friend Alban Berg in 1912. Reprint edition. | Voice and Piano | |

It is idiomatically sound, with much melodic interest and contrapuntal movement. This particular duo is comprised of three contrasting movements: Allegro moderato, Andante poco adagio con variazioni, and Allegro poco presto. | Flute Duet | |
