Written after the CONCERTINO FOR CLARINET AND ORCHESTRA in E-flat, Op. 26 and CONCERTO FOR CLARINET No. 2, J.118/Op. 74, also composed for Bärmann, show that Weber had a complete understanding of the instrument's capabilities. The first concerto departs from the lighter, playful nature of the CONCERTINO with a much more serious, almost operatic, expression. The work premiered on June 13, 1811, in Munich with Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria in the audience. Cast in three movements, it opens with a bold and spirited Allegro, followed by a lyrical Romanza rich in operatic sentiment, and concludes with a vivacious polacca-style Rondo that demands both agility and personality from the soloist. The first performance took place in Munich on November 25, 1811. A staple of the clarinet repertoire, the concerto exploits the full expressive and technical range of the clarinet, pioneering a new, idiomatic style for the instrument that influenced generations to come. Both pieces were rapturously received by the Parisian press at the October 1923 premiere at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. Cole Porter later believed the score to be lost. In 1970 the score was discovered at Yale, from which William Bolcom and Richard Rodney Bennett created this two-piano version. The ballet is about an immigrant to New York who encounters a seductive heiress, a tap-dancer, a flapper, a cowboy, and a movie star beauty. Two copies needed for performance. | Two Pianos, 4 hands | |
