(Damenwahl) | The operetta DIE LUSTIGE WITWE (THE MERRY WIDOW) was written in 1905 by Austro-Hungarian composer Franz Lehár (1870-1948), with a libretto by Viktor Léon and Leo Stein. The story tells of a rich widow for whom her countrymen attempt to find her a new husband that will keep her money in the principality. The operetta was successful when it premiered on December 30, 1905, at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna, with Lehár conducting, and it has remained a staple of the opera repertoire ever since. The Act I FINALE takes place at a "Ladies' Choice" dance, where suitors swarm the wealthy widow Hanna for a spin around the ballroom. The only person she wants to dance with, Danilo, refuses, but he makes every effort to keep the other suitors away as he promised the Baron Zeta he would do. After all other suitors have given up and left, Danilo finally asks an annoyed Hanna to dance with him. She refuses, and Danilo dances by himself until she is finally worn down enough to fall into his arms. I later discovered that there is historical speculation that Bach may have composed this piece for solo violin. Inspired by this, I used the urtext of the piece to create this arrangement. It is in the piece’s original key, and it is designed to transcribe the full and grand sound of the organ to the solo violin. This arrangement intentionally creates the true sound of Bach’s piece, while adding variation-like figures within the Fugue’s main theme - which is repeated throughout. These figures include sixteenth-note triplets, thirty-second notes, and additional double-stops. It was important to me to remain true to my sense of what Bach may have intended for this piece if played on a violin, while allowing my own musical and stylistic preferences to blend into this arrangement. --Stuart Carlson | Solo violin | |

| 13620 | C75C2BE4-272C-4BE3-85A6-8BE251F86759 | A298902 | La Gioconda: Act II (tenor): Cielo e mar | Italian composer Amilcare Ponchielli's (1834-1886) 4-act opera La Gioconda was first performed by La Scala in Milan on April 8, 1876, and was an immediate success, acting as a bridge between the Verdi's Aida and Otello. The libretto, by Arrigo Boito (as Tobia Gorrio), is derived from the 1835 Victor Hugo play Angelo, Tyrant of Padua. It tells the tale of La Gioconda, a young woman in love with a man (Enzo). But she aids and eventually sacrifices herself for Laura, her rival for Enzo's love, when Laura unknowingly saves La Gioconda's mother. The opera remains a staple in the western opera repertoire, particularly in Italy, and the ballet scene in Act III, Dance of the Hours, has become famous in it's own right, with it's inclusion in the original 1940 Fantasia by Disney propelling it to household recognition. Cielo e mar! is sung by Enzo in Act II, titled Il Rosario (The Rosary) as he waits on his ship for his love Laura to arrive.
