| 4303 | 3DB91FF9-8579-4613-9BA4-5717E2BBD66E | EBM0630065 | Entropy | Entropy seeks to create a musical experience of “entropy.” Beginning with a definition of entropy found in “Webster’s 7th New Collegiate Dictionary, 1965,” read by Tom Bryant of WSM Nashville, the music alternates greater and lesser degrees of order culminating in a final improvisatory section in which previously presented electronic materials are heard at high speed while the pianist abandons ordered pitch to move freely with mallets on the strings and soundboard of the piano. Commissioned by the Nashville Youth Symphony Orchestra, Willis Page, conductor, Entropy is for double brass sextet [4431], improvisation group (flute, piano, celesta, and harp), and electronic tape and was premiered in 1967. The tape part was created in the Electronic Music Studio of the Peabody College School of Music (in Nashville). Bernard Jackson, collaborated to write the civil rights musical Fly Blackbird. Inspired by the student ‘sit-ins” in Greensboro, North Carolina, the growing movement for civil and human rights, and the pursuit of justice for African Americans throughout the United States, the production reflected the times and the means by which they believed change would come to American society. Opening at the Metropolitan Theater in Los Angeles in 1961, the multiracial cast and underlying message of the production challenged young people to stand up and use their voices to affect change. | 4320 | 3DEF312C-8F95-4947-B511-6A8410E921A2 | EBM0610720 | MCMXC Tanglewood for Orchestra | MCMXC Tanglewood was commissioned by The Boston Symphony Orchestra to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Tanglewood Music Center in 1990. Built upon a motto fashioned from the Roman numeral letters and the 3-syllable word of its title, the work begins with a brilliant fanfare harmonizing the C-major motto chromatically, laying out, in essence, a 12-tone row. There follows a misterioso section for busy, whispering, muted strings, against a sinuous line in the oboes, gradually taken over by the other woodwinds. This turns into an energetic dance in 3/4 time, with each orchestral family taking enthusiastic part. Recollections of the opening motto introduce slower material with sustained, complex chords in the muted strings providing a background for elegant decorated lines in the celesta, flutes, and glockenspiel. A brief but vigorous 2/4 Presto brings teh fanfare-overture to a close, the last 10 bars consisting of reiterations of the note G, leaving a dominant effect to the C-major orientation of the composer’s row. Premiered by The Boston Symphony Orchestra, Dennis Russell Davies conducting, August 4, 1990. | 3(Pi)3(EH)3(BsCl)3(Cbn) 4331 Timp Pno/Cel Str |
