Bernard Jackson, collaborated to write the civil rights musical Fly Blackbird. Inspired by the student ‘sit-ins” in Greensboro, North Carolina, the growing movement for civil and human rights, and the pursuit of justice for African Americans throughout the United States, the production reflected the times and the means by which they believed change would come to American society. Opening at the Metropolitan Theater in Los Angeles in 1961, the multiracial cast and underlying message of the production challenged young people to stand up and use their voices to affect change. Fly Blackbird became a call to arms for students on the UCLA campus to join the movement, and won the 1962 Obie Award for Best Musical. Lorenzo Da Ponte, who also collaborated with Mozart on DON GIOVANNI and COSÍ FAN TUTTE, wrote the libretto, which tells the story of the servant Figaro, and his lover, Susanna, who overcome their employer’s schemes to seduce her and secure their own marital bliss. LE NOZZE DI FIGARO premiered May 1, 1786 at the Burgtheater in Vienna. It has become immensely popular and is among the most frequently performed of all operas. NON PIÙ ANDRAI (YOU SHALL GO NO MORE) is sung by Figaro at the end of the first act. Figaro teases Cherubino, who is being sent away to the military, in contrast to the flirtatious life he has in the Count’s palace.
