Program NotesThe Princess in the Garden is a String Orchestra version of the Prelude for String Quartet, which was composed in 1985.

The structure of the piece is mosaic. Small fragments of melodies and rhythmic ideas keep recurring, but the final design is not revealed until the concluding gestures in the solo violin, resolving into an optimistic chordal statement.

While the structure is not a traditional musical design, it is derived from the way in which we live. By this I mean that events in our lives do not occur in nicely ordered patterns, but rather in less structured, somewhat random fashion. Inevitable, we reach points in our lives when order and reason prevail: it makes sense.

In this intensely personal work, it seems appropriate to mold the experience as closely as possible to the real life people and events which guided its creation. --Edward Applebaum

The Princess in the Garden was first composed in 1985 as a Prelude for string quartet; in 1986 the composer recast the work for string orchestra, and retained the title. The intimacy of the first version is retained in the orchestral setting, with light, transparent scoring, and several solo passages. After a brief, shimmering chordal introduction, the celli announce a rising, wide - skipping motive; this provides most of the melodic material. Some of the rhythms are complex from the player+s point of view, but the effect of the piece is one of transparency, quiet, and a great poignancy, ending optimistically. --James H Winter, PhD, Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra
