Program NotesMessiah, Prince of Peace is part of a longer piece called Trinity Canticles which I wrote in 1989 for the Bloomington (MN) Symphony Orchestra. It is often used as a separate composition and has become the most performed orchestral work I have written. It is a serene work featuring mainly slow, sustained strings at the beginning and the end. In the middle section, the winds are given quotations of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" and "O Sacred Head, Now Wounded," calling attention to the central events of birth, death and resurrection in the life of Christ.
