| 4205 | 3C039E53-F482-4765-A39D-F58893BBF263 | A151002 | Faust: Ballet Music (complete) | CHARLES GOUNOD (1818-1893) was a prolific French composer in the mid 1800s, but he was not well recognized by his peers or the public until his opera FAUST was first performed in Paris in 1859. The opera remains today as one of the most dramatic and popular in the repertoire. The libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, based on the two-part play by Goethe, tells the story of the aging philosopher in search of lost youth. Selling his soul to the devil, he is transformed into a young man, but when he falls in love with the virtuous Marguerite, her own soul hangs in the balance. It premiered at the Théâtre Lyrique on March 19, 1859. The Act 5 ballet depicts a riotous and carnal celebration that takes place on Walpurgis Night. Instrumentation: 2 (2nd d. | 4208 | 3C0DBC70-6BE5-4F65-B141-6AA8BA454324 | M916602 | Canto de Taieira: from Folksongs of Brazil | Canto de Taieira is a composition based on folksongs from the northeast of Brazil. Taieiras are groups of black women and children who accompany the procession of Our Lady of Rosary on Epiphany and the procession of St. Benedict. This celebration takes place on January 6 in the city of Laranjeiras in the state of Sergipe. Mesquita uses three themes that are linked to the celebration of the sacred and the divine. These themes are contrasted with another song derived from the music of the Catholic procession from the São Paulo costal region as well as from the Epiphany celebration in Minas Gerais. All these themes, which are presented in fragments and also in their entirety, are combined with traditional Brazilian rhythms throughout the work. In his description of Canto de Taieira, Mr. Mesquita writes “It is as if several ethnic groups that make up the Brazilian nation joined together in a privileged moment of sonorous apotheosis that aspires the union of body/soul, the sensitive/the inexpressible.” Mesquita combines syncopated rhythms, styles and traditional folksongs are masterfully combined to form energetic and lively dance-like qualities. The composition accurately represents the spirit the people live in northeast Brazil who use the importation of both the “sacred” and “profane” in their religious celebrations. | Concert Band | |
| 4209 | 3C0E0180-8332-4259-813E-8D239ABEDA94 | SO174C | Mimosa Shower | Mimosa Shower was written with a sense of anticipation for spring. The brightness of D Major is perfect for string orchestra, and the yellow color of the mimosa flower reminds the composer of this key. Mimosa Shower opens with a vivid impressionistic introduction, followed by a gently flowing theme. Every instrument plays the melody which flows side to side. Yukiko Nishimura creates a dialogue between the sections of the orchestra, asking each part to have awareness of the conversation and to respond musically. The orchestra creates harmonies which ebb and flow as the wind blows through the mimosas. This level 4 piece is expressive, legato and intricate, with minimal time signature changes, and a memorable expression of the expectancy of mimosa blossoms in spring. | String Orchestra | |
