(Finale) | Written three years after his Manfred Symphony, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's (1840-1893) Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64 was composed in 1888. Although it has been surpassed in popularity a bit over the decades by his fourth and sixth symphonies, the work remains a staple in the orchestral repertoire. It premiered on November 17, 1888, by the St. Petersburg Philharmonic with the composer conducting. Movement IV (Finale. Andante maestoso - Allegro vivace) is the most striking of the movements. Early reviews of the complete work were often hostile, due in large part to the fourth movement. One 1892 Boston review says, for example, "Of the Fifth Tchaikovsky Symphony one hardly knows what to say ... In the Finale we have all the untamed fury of the Cossack, whetting itself for deeds of atrocity, against all the sterility of the Russian steppes. The furious peroration sounds like nothing so much as a horde of demons struggling in a torrent of brandy, the music growing drunker and drunker. Pandemonium, delirium tremens, raving, and above all, noise worse confounded!" History has been much kinder to the work as a whole, and to the Finale movement specifically, than those early perceptions. Elsa, a princess in Brabant, is rescued and wedded by a knight in shining armor who insists on remaining nameless. Most are familiar with the famous wedding march from the opera (commonly referred to today as "Here Comes the Bride"), and this original chorus and orchestra version may be easily programmed either as an opera excerpt or as a concert work. Initially given five folksongs from which to choose, Ravel supplied a piano accompaniment for them in only thirty-six hours. Having impressed those who supplied the original five, three more were produced, which Ravel also quickly set to piano accompaniment, in a style imitative of the Mediterranean lands, but remaining distinctly French in its execution. The five melodies in this collection were selected from those eight. Ravel had started orchestrating all five as well, completing two, leaving Manuel Rosenthal to complete the remaining three. Songs in the collection: I. Le Réveil de la Mariée (Wake Up, My Dear; G minor), II. Là-bas, vers l'église (Out There, Where the Church Tower; G# minor), III. Quel galant m'est comparable (Which Gallant Can Compare With Me?; G Major), IV. Chanson des cueilleuses de lentisques (Song of the Lentisk Gatherers; A Major), and V. Tout gai! (Be Gay!; Ab Major). Original keys. Reprint edition. The Ravel/Rosenthal orchestrations have been edited by Clinton Nieweg in an edition available from E.F. Kalmus. | Voice and Piano

Other students included composers Matteo Capranica and Joseph Haydn. This setting of Psalm 91 utilizes the Latin text. The 91st psalm of the Book of Psalms, generally known in English by its first verse in the King James Version: "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." In the Greek Septuagint version of the Bible, and in its Latin translation Vulgate, this psalm is Psalm 90 in a slightly different numbering system. In Latin, it is known as 'Qui habitat". As a psalm of protection, it is commonly invoked in times of hardship. | SSAA Chorus, String Orchestra or Keyboard
| 4137 | 3B1F9FDC-74F7-466E-B82B-B21DDE64292E | B588 | The Break: Mastering the Middle Register of the Clarinet | "Crossing the break" can be a source of frustration for developing clarinetists. The Break is a logical guide for mastering this important step in clarinet performance. The method is divided into two parts. Part I contents: the clarinet overtone series – how new note names attach to previously learned fingerings ? how to incorporate ‘right hand down’ as a developmental technique ? one octave scales across the break ? first melodies in the clarion register that teach basic musical concepts needed for advanced performance Part II contents: studies from Rhythmical Articulation by Pasquale Bona, selected and edited for clarinet to prepare students for upper level performance. Rhythmical Articulation was originally written to assist singers with rhythmical and pitch accuracy. Range: The range is appropriate for developing clarinetists (low B to B just above the treble staff). Third-line B natural is often referred to as “the break” because it is the note where the register key is added to produce the middle register. These studies and exercises center around third-line B natural and provide a means to develop smooth connections between the lower and middle registers of the clarinet. Technique: The studies have been adapted for clarinet to cover nine key signatures. Appropriate articulations, dynamics, and expressive markings have been added to reflect common practice in the classical style. Advanced rhythms and time signatures are introduced with moderate tempos. Musical terms have been added to identify phrases and suggest expression. The Break also includes an introduction to the altissimo register. | Clarinet | |
