The work is a very brief “romp” for piano and wind ensemble inspired by the poem of the same name by poet Harry Humes—which describes the flight of a human cannonball. His two famous "tutor" books are still the most popular bassoon etudes in use today, well over 120 years after they were written. This anthology represents the first-ever publication that contains all 11 of the extant full recital pieces for bassoon and piano that Weissenborn envisioned as the third part to this tutor in a single volume. Southern Music is proud to present this fine collection of "Tone and Performance Studies" to players of all levels, edited by veteran Principal Bassoonist for the Detroit Symphony, Robert Williams. | Bassoon, Piano | |

Composed in 1935 and 1936, it adopts a leaner, more economical style than that of the previous two symphonies. The first performance took place on November 6, 1936 by the Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Leonard Stokowski. The piece is cast in three movements, the central Lento serving a dual purpose as both slow movement and scherzo. Russian dance rhythms make a prominent appearance in the finale. Since the revival of his music in the 1970s, the symphony has steadily improved in popularity and critical assessment. Parts for younger string players have been included in score and parts so that conductors can introduce those players to the full orchestra setting. These performers are a critical part of the experience as they often are the only ones with the melody. | Full Orchestra |
