Despite its unenthusiastic reception, Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) considered the SYMPHONY NO. 3 IN A MINOR, OP. 44, one of his finest works. Composed in 1935 and 1936, it adopts a leaner, more economical style than that of the previous two symphonies. The first performance took place on November 6, 1936 by the Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Leonard Stokowski. The piece is cast in three movements, the central Lento serving a dual purpose as both slow movement and scherzo. Russian dance rhythms make a prominent appearance in the finale. Since the revival of his music in the 1970s, the symphony has steadily improved in popularity and critical assessment. Instrumentation: [2+Picc.2+EH.2+BCl.2+CBsn: 4.3.3.1: Timp: Perc(5-6) Clst.2 Hp: Str]. FULL SCORE ONLY.
