406339EBE0C6-98A5-4DE1-AC82-D6CBDEA763C2R01615Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt! (This Kiss to the Whole World!)Diesen Kuss der ganzen Welt! is a famous line from the Ode to Joy by Friedrich Schiller, the text set by Beethoven in his Ninth Symphony. As this work was commissioned by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra to be on the same program with the Ninth, this quote was chosen to be both the title and the message: that all humankind is together in this world, we are all related, and we should celebrate our humanity with love and joy. In addition to the title, there are several musical connections to Beethoven's Ninth in this work: the opening tremolo in the violins; the use of recitative-like phrases in the cellos; the shapes of some melodic fragments; the presence of timpani solos.2.2.2.2: 4.2.3(BsTbn).0: Perc(3): Str

Also known as "Barytontrio No. 70" in some editions, this work originally written for baryton, viola and violoncello is one of about 175 compositions written for the baryton (a stringed instrument similar to the viola da gamba) by Haydn between 1762 and 1775. Given that the blend of the three similar instruments makes it difficult to distinguish the sound of the individual instruments, arrangements for euphonium, trombone, bassoon, and cello trios, all available from the publisher, presents no major alteration to the original version.Bassoon

40783A1229C5-CBC6-415B-A5E0-47DAC70FF8EEA932190Violin Concerto No. 1Karol Szymanowski’s Violin Concerto No. 1, Op. 35, is considered one of the first modern violin concertos. It rejects traditional tonality and romantic aesthetics. It was written in 1916 while the composer was in Zarudzie, Ukraine. Paul Kochanski advised Szymanowski on the fine point of violin technique during the composition of the concerto, and he later wrote the cadenza. The work is dedicated to Kochanski. The likely inspiration for the concerto was Noc Majowa, a poem by the Polish poet Tadeusz Micinski. The concerto doesn't follow or duplicate the poem, yet Szymanowski's ecstatic, sumptuous music is an ideal companion to Micinski's language. The concerto was premiered 1 November 1922 in Warsaw with Jozef Oziminski as the soloist.3(3dPicc).3(3dEH).3+1.2+1: 4.3.3.1: Timp.Perc(6).Pno.Clst.2 Hp: Str(12.12.8.8.6)
