While the work made little impression on the gala attendees on January 27, 1902, upon publication it became a hit. The present score has been transcribed by Tom McCanna from the original orchestral parts originally published in 1903. While APRÈS UN RÊVE is No. 1 in the collection, it was actually written last, in 1877, while No. 2 (HYMNE) was written in 1870, and No. 3 (BARCAROLLE) was written in 1873. The text is taken from an anonymous Italian poem adapted into French by Romain Bussine. The poem describes the dream of a flight with a lover away from earth. Upon awakening, the dreamer longs to return to their dream. Henri Büsser made this arrangement for medium voice and orchestra. Written in rondo form, the piece evokes its source material with intricate detail. His method of aligning the music closely with the speech patterns of the verse was praised by Leos Janacek, who would use a similar technique in his opera JENUFA. Antonín Bennewitz conducted the premiere on June 1, 1896 at the Prague Conservatory. The first public performance took place on November 14th of that year in London. 1003392C9C165-DF1A-40C4-940C-298DD2028D37A153402Messiah, HWV 56: Pifa (Sinfonia Pastorale)This edition of George Frideric Handel's (1685-1759) most famous work was adapted for performances in Vienna by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). Suggested by Gottfried van Swieten, the German libretto is based largely on Martin Luther's translation of the Bible. Mozart re-orchestrated the majority of Handel's work, with the addition of wind instruments making up the largest part of the changes, although it is also an abridgement of Handel's original with Mozart even partly re-composing a few sections. The arrangement by Mozart, which premiered at the home of Johann Esterházy on March 6th, 1789 with Mozart conducting, was first published in 1803, and it played a large part in making Messiah Handel's most widely known oratorio. The Pifa (or Sinfonia Pastorale) is a purely instrumental movement that takes place during the first part of the oratorio. 1003592CB1810-B808-4675-8AD8-785DE1FBCA97A141402Symphony No. 7 in D minor, Op. 70/B. 141While his Symphony No. 9 is better known, Antonín Dvo?ák's (1841-1904) Symphony No. 7 is argued by many to be his best symphonic work. Inspired in part by his friend Johannes Brahms' new Symphony No. 3, and with a commission from the London Philharmonic Society, Dvo?ák composed a work with his darkest and most passionate content, writing to one of his friends: "Now I am occupied with my new symphony (for London) and wherever I go I have nothing in mind but my work which must be such again as to make a stir in the world, and God grant that it may." This symphony, which shows comparatively few traces of the composer's folk Czech background, was dedicated to the London Philharmonic Society that commissioned it and is sometimes to referred to as the "London Symphony." It was premiered by the London Philharmonic Orchestra in St. James' Hall, Dvo?ák conducting, on April 22, 1885. A Critical Edition based on the composer's manuscript and edited by Otakar Šourek is also available from the publisher.
