| 9925 | 911BE7AC-10E2-42A1-B252-0F372649A736 | TC52901 | Suite for Wind Quintet | American composer and folk music specialist, Ruth Crawford Seeger (1901-1953), was a prominent voice in the emerging modernist aesthetic in the early 20th century, and she became a central member of a group of American composers known as the "ultramoderns". Most of her compositional output took place during the 1920s and 1930s, with her turning towards the study of folk music in the late 1930s until her death in 1953. Her music had an influence on later composer, particularly Elliott Carter. The late Suite for Winds (1952) has been edited by Kurt Stone. Woodwind quintet. | Woodwind Quintet | |

| 9929 | 9126D489-BBDB-4BE4-9BC3-AB9FEF83CD34 | A174302 | Idomeneo, K. 366: Overture [original version] | IDOMENEO, K. 366, is considered Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's (1756-1791) first mature opera, completed between 1780 and 1781. The opera was commissioned in 1780 by Karl Theodor, Elector of Bavaria, to write the opera for a court carnival. The subject, likely selected by Theodor also, was adapted by librettist Giambattista Varesco from French text by Antoine Danchet, which was based on a 1705 play by Crébillon le Tragique. The plot revolves around Idomeneo, the king of Crete, who struggles with a requirement to sacrifice his own son, Prince Idamante, to the god Neptune, while Idamante and Ilia, daughter to the defeated Trojan King Priam, struggle with their own love for each other. It premiered on January 1, 1781, in Munich at the Hoftheater, Christian Cannabich conducting, though the opera did not find a place in the standard repertory until the mid-twentieth century. The overture is now a regular part of orchestral concert programs, both in the original version and in an ending written by Carl Reinecke. | 9933 | 912971f2-9e3a-11f0-a418-0022482c9682 | A811702 | Ballata delle Gnomidi | Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936) wrote the orchestral work BALLATA DELLE GNOMIDI (THE BALLAD OF THE GNOMIDES) in 1920, after he had already begun to gain international attention for his orchestral tone poem, FONTANE DI ROMA. Based on a poem by Claudio Clausetti, this work tells the tale of a society of grotesque gnomes and their ritual where two females select a hapless male, drag him to their bedchamber for a fatal ménage à trois while the rest of the of gnome horde waits outside, then wait until morning where they throw the male's corpse over a seaside cliff before dancing in a mad frenzy with the other gnomes. Despite the poor reception at the April 11, 1920, premiere in Rome under Bernardino Molinari's baton, the work was taken up by Arturo Toscanini and Fritz Reiner, with later critics comparing Respighi's use of orchestral effects depicting whoops, shrieks, and cackling laughter to Bernard Hermann's use of the violin glissandos to depict murder in the film Psycho. | 9935 | 91301D09-4996-4EF5-B349-4569EB1E7334 | 20412102 | Morning Has Broken | This beautiful song is used as a popular hymn tune in many churches, but its roots are in folk song rather than sacred music. It begins with a statement of theme in 9/8 meter in Bb major, with movement in the harmonic voices, and it is followed by three variations. The first, still in Bb, is in 6/8 like a jig, the second is in C major as a processional march, and the final variation is in Eb major and is quite a surprise, in the Latin swing style. Independent rhythmic reading is essential to the success of the performance, and some experience with syncopated swing rhythms would be advantageous. Duration is only two and a half minutes and range is two octaves from high F down to low F. The variety of meters, keys, and styles creates some challenges in the performance even though short in duration. OMEA Class: B | Flute Trio | |
