| Review | "Poetry, passion blend in masterful concert. Friday's MusicFest concert at Crooker Theater included... two new settings of poems by Edna St. Vincent Millay, a Maine treasure and the best-loved poet since Sappho. It doesn't get much better than this.
Stephen Novick is to be thanked for commissioning Michael Cohen to set the two Millay songs.... They are masterful, and were perfectly rendered.... There was a strange atmosphere in the crowded theater after the last note, as if people wanted to jump up and cheer but were afraid to do so after the first hearing of a "modern" work.... Maybe Cohen could do a dozen or so of the sonnets. I'd contribute to the fee.
--Christopher Hyde, Maine Sunday Telegram |
