| 2421 | 2215AC89-8B4E-4069-B333-12844AB96754 | A614590 | For Children, Sz. 42: Ten Pieces | Béla Bartók's (1881-1945) "For Children," Sz. 42, was written from 1908-1908 as a cycle of short piano pieces. Comprised originally of 85 pieces in four volumes, each is based on either a Hungarian or Slovakian folk tune, and were written as student pieces that progress slightly in difficulty through the cycle. Bartók revised the set in 1945, removing six works for either being inaccurately transcribed or because he discovered they were not original folk tunes. Also substantially changing some of the harmonizations, the new cycle of 79 pieces were reissued in two volumes. Hungarian music educator and composer Leó Weiner (1885-1960) took ten of the pieces from the cycle and transcribed them for strings in 1952. A string count of 8-8-5-5-5 is included in the set, but an optional violin 3 is also included as a substitution for the viola. | String Orchestra (8-8-3/5-5-5) (Vn3 replaces Va ad lib) | |
| 2422 | 221C3E87-893C-4036-B9EB-0B52505ED44C | SU430 | Aria and Finale | Aria and Finale for Soprano Saxophone and Piano was written at the suggestion of Dr. Peter Clinch (1930-1995), a leading player of both saxophone and clarinet, who taught at the Melbourne College and toured extensively outside his native Australia. The saxophone is used as a lyrical instrument, and sustains long melodic lines, particularly in the opening Aria. Throughout the work, saxophone and piano engage in expressive duets, counterpointing or answering each other. There are also passages designed to show off the agility of the instrument, notably in the accompanied cadenza in the Finale and the fast-moving coda. The composer's stated aim in composing the piece was to produce a piece for saxophone which highlights the lyrical qualities of the instrument as they would perhaps have been envisaged by Adolphe Sax himself at the time the instrument was invented. It is considered one of the classic verismo (Italian for "realism") operas, which depicts life not among royalty or the Gods but among the average contemporary man and woman and focuses on their problems. Written in two months for a composition competition, and submitted on the last day, Mascagni's was one of three operas among seventy three selected for a premiere in Rome. Cavalleria Rusticana depicts a young soldier's return to his home town, and the subsequent affairs, jealousies, and duels to the death that result from pursuit of new and old lovers. The opera is often double-billed on the same evening with Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo.
