IN PRAISE OF TALL POPPIES is a work which features the orchestra's brass section. As with all of my pieces, this one shows the influence of my jazz background, in this case particularly with the great bands of Stan Kenton. The musical materials all come from the opening fanfare. They are unwoven, coloristically explored, and put back together in a free section which occurs a little past mid-point. From there on, there is one large, driving gesture, ending with the brass recapturing the opening mood over the rest of the orchestra's relentless ostinato. Tall Poppies are a peculiar Australian institution, so much so that one often hears the expression 'tall poppy syndrome'. The premise is that, in a land where equity is extremely important, anything which rises abovethe level playing field must be cut down. Elitism is scorned as being contrary to the concept of equality. The tall poppy syndrome permeates much of Australian intellectual and cultural life. Fortunately, everywhere you turn, there are new blossoms. This work was composed for, and is dedicated to Robert Bernhardt...the tallest of the tall. --Edward Applebaum
