The work was commissioned by The Concert Artists' Promotion Trust, composed for and dedicated to the pianist Carlo Grante. In describing the work, the composer writes: "To compose this work, I imagined Chopin alive today, living in New York, perhaps making some money at a jazz club rather than teaching so many students." Rorianne Schrade of the New York Concert Review wrote, "the work is brimming with all the poetry and virtuosity one would hope for in a work inspired by the great Frédéric Chopin, but its tonal language is deliciously modern." | Piano Solo | |

FOREVER FREE is cast in one movement in three sections, with the title inspired by the state motto, "Montani semper liberi," usually translated as "Mountaineers forever free." Unable to prove her innocence without betraying her father, she is saved from execution at the last minute upon the discovery that her pet magpie is the silver thief. It was based on a well-known true incident of a French servant girl who was not so lucky, only being exonerated by the discovery of the magpie after the sentence was carried out. This arrangement of the overture by Gustav Friedrich Kogel is sometimes referred to as the "German edition" and includes extra brass and music as compared to the original by Rossini. He first wrote the concert overture in E Major, Op. 21 in 1826 at the age of seventeen for no other reason than the love that he and his siblings had for Shakespeare’s stage works. He wrote the incidental music, Op. 61 (likely the best-known incidental music in the repertoire) in 1842 as a commission from King Frederick William IV of Prussia. In creating the complete later version, the composer incorporated the original overture, Op. 21 as the overture for the incidental music and the first of the 14 numbers. Starting with what must be four of the most evocative and memorable chords in music, the work also is the origin of the Wedding March (No. 9) used in so many ceremonies today, commonly referred to as “Here Comes the Bride.” The work was premiered in Potsdam, Germany on October 14, 1843 by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, conducted by the composer. The “Dance of the Clowns” (Bergamask Dance) movement, No. 11, is a modified reappearance of Nick Bottom’s donkey dance as heard in the overture.
