| 17381 | FD260CF7-55CD-4A64-B00E-17EB265B1A50 | A198802 | Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs), Op. 20 | Written by Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908) in 1878, Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs), Op. 20 is a favorite among violin virtuosos, having been recorded many times, including by Sarasate himself. Some of the themes thought to be of Romani (gypsy) origin are actually Hungarian, but this was a common mistake by composers of the time, and the work is no less thrilling for it. Premiered in 1878 in Leipzig, the showpiece is divided into four sections that are performed with no pause. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.0.0: Timp.Perc(1): Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Violin. | 17382 | FD2A70D2-2041-41EC-B43D-0054671CCF20 | A115002 | Concerto Grosso, Op. 6, No. 1 in G, HWV 319 | George Frideric Handel's (1685-1759) Concerti Grossi, Op. 6 (also Twelve Grand Concertos, HWV 319-330), are a collection of twelve concerti grossi for two violins and cello with an accompanying four-part string orchestra and harpsichord continuo, and they are among the best examples of the Baroque concerto grosso. Modeled more on Arcangelo Corelli's concerto da chiesa and concerto da camara than on Antonio Vivaldi's three-movement form adopted by J.S. Bach, these 1739 works were composed to be performed during the intermissions of Handel's oratorios. Among the twelve Concerto Grosso can be found a mixture of original music and music borrowed from other works by the composer. No. 1 in G Major, HWV 319, borrows from the overture of Handel's Italian opera Imeneo, reworking it completely for the first movement. The fifth and final movement also quotes liberally from Domenico Scarlatti's Keyboard Sonata in G Major, K. 2. Instrumentation: Str (2-2-2-1-1 in set): Hpchd (in set): Soli Vn(2).Solo Vc. (2 oboes were later added by Handel, and those are included in Kalmus number A7858, critical edition.) This urtext edition has been edited by Wilhelm Weismann. | Str (2-2-2-1-1 in set): Hpchd (in set): Soli Vn(2).Solo Vc | |

I. In Thanks of Life is a brief anthem setting of a prayer that focuses on one of the key truths of the Christian faith. The text is by Peter J. Gomes, Plummer Professor of Christian Morals and the Pusey Minister in the Memorial Church. II. The Eternal Dove is a brief anthem setting of a text by Joseph Beaumont (1615–1699). The musical language contrasts the sound of “open” intervals of 4ths and 5ths with the “close” intervals of 2nds, 3rds, 6ths, and 7ths. The text is set in two strophes and a coda based on rising 5ths— harmonic twists appear as it soars harmonically upward. | SATB Chorus

After a brief introduction, the principal theme that permeates the entire work is introduced by the first violins. A static interlude is followed by successive imitations of the theme that lead to an intense climax. The final section of the work presents a somewhat more animated statement of the same thematic material. The coda recalls the quiet interlude that appeared earlier. - George Walker | String Orchestra

He dedicated his CONCERTO FOR VIOLIN in A Minor, Op. 53/B. 108, to Joseph Joachim, who had provided him with valuable advice on how to write the solo part. It premiered in Prague on October 14, 1883, with František Ond?í?ek as the soloist. Although Joachim remained critical of the work, it has since found a permanent place in the repertoire for its Slavic verve and attractive lyricism. On May 31, 1962, Anderson completed his miniature THE GOLDEN YEARS, creating versions for string orchestra and full orchestra. He conducted the first performance in-studio for his last Decca album on June 19. Shortly after, he transcribed the work for concert band and solo piano.
