Two Harvard Motets (2000) for SATB choir unaccompanied were written for and are dedicated to Murray Forbes Somerville (organist and choirmaster at Harvard University) and the Harvard Morning Choir. I. In Thanks of Life is a brief anthem setting of a prayer that focuses on one of the key truths of the Christian faith. The text is by Peter J. Gomes, Plummer Professor of Christian Morals and the Pusey Minister in the Memorial Church. II. The Eternal Dove is a brief anthem setting of a text by Joseph Beaumont (1615–1699). The musical language contrasts the sound of “open” intervals of 4ths and 5ths with the “close” intervals of 2nds, 3rds, 6ths, and 7ths. The text is set in two strophes and a coda based on rising 5ths— harmonic twists appear as it soars harmonically upward.
