With a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) worked on it from 1893 to 1895. It first appeared at the Teatro Regio in Turin on February 1, 1896, conducted by 28-year-old Arturo Toscanini. Weighed negatively against Turin’s recent Italian premiere of the Wagner opera GOTTERDAMMERUNG, it received a lukewarm response from audience and critics. A few months later, concertgoers filled opera houses on both sides of the Atlantic to hear it. "O soave fanciulla" (O gentle maiden) is a sung at the end of Act I where Rodolfo and Mimi realize they have fallen in love with each other. 17343fca3513c-9e38-11f0-a418-0022482c968220250018March, Minuet, and CapriccioA rather unique and charming string quartet by Benjamin Franklin discovered in 1945 in the Music Division of the Bibliotheque Nationale (Paris, France). The instrumentation (3 violins and violoncello) was certainly not standard for the eighteenth century, nor were the instructions to retune the open strings on each instrument to provide 16 different pitches. The five-movement dance suite could then be played without left hand fingering! The work has been skillfully adapted for string orchestra by Kenneth Sarch...but without the unusual tuning!String Orchestra
