Its libretto, penned by the author Ignaz Schnitzer, was based on the story Saffi by Mór Jókai. Set in 18th century Hungary, it tells the story of a gypsy girl who is discovered to be the daughter of a Turkish Pasha and the owner of a hidden fortune. During the composer's lifetime, the operetta enjoyed great success, second only to the popularity of DIE FLEDERMAUS. | 1731 | 184710DE-8B75-4775-A8CB-CE9E8760AA3D | SO191C | Mekanno | Mekanno is an appealing and energetic composition for strings that projects an urban, contemporary vibe. Written at a level 3, it is based on an infectious 8-bar motif, and will appeal to players of all ages. Parts are written idiomatically for strings and are within reach of all performers at the developing orchestra level. As they build towards the final climax, players performing Mekanno will all feel as though they are part of a big machine; lurching and chugging toward some wonderfully mysterious destination. Though the momentum in Mekanno is rhythmically driven, the piece is also bursting with melody. It has been written to ensure that all sections have interesting parts to play. All instruments have been awarded interesting melodic sections, as well as countermelodies and fun bits of rhythmic and melodic interplay. Range for all instruments is in the lower positions in order to allow directors to place their focus on intonation and rhythmic accuracy. Performance time is just under 4 minutes. | String Orchestra

Though its executant demands are slight, this agreeably spontaneous piece highlights one of music's great paradoxes - that expressive power often derives from the simplest of technical means."- from liner notes for Itzhak Perlman's recording of "Concertos from My Childhood." This transcription by Robert Klotman scores instruments commonly found in a school setting. Includes piano reduction for rehearsal only. | Violin, Piano

| 1740 | 18632ED0-1400-48A3-A3A4-EF7A7B9A3846 | 50453001 | Reverie and Rag | An original work in two contrasting styles, both imitative of the sentimental music of the very early 1900's when ragtime was prevalent. Melodies lie well for the saxophones but could be a bit challenging at times for class C players. Ranges are practical. There is an alternate 3rd alto part, and also an alternate baritone sax part making a variety of other instrumentations possible. Both legato and staccato articulations are necessary. Much thought has gone into the preparation of style, articulation and phrasing. | Eb Alto Saxophone 1 ,2, Bb Tenor Saxophone 1 and 2 |
