| 1701 | 17ED0036-5748-4A3B-9F6E-1BE3138EC52E | A144702 | Symphony in D minor, FWV (M). 48 | César Franck's (1822-1890) SYMPHONY IN D MINOR is the French composer's best-known orchestral work. In three, rather than four, movements, the work's shape is attained through thematic transformation, with important themes recurring in all of the movements. Bumping up against the factionalism of French musical culture, the premiere took some time to be arranged as the leading conductors of the day, sure of being attacked by the opposing faction, were tentative in scheduling new works. When the work was premiered in Paris by the Societe des Concerts du Conservatoire on February 17 1889 under Jules Garcin, opinion was, not surprisingly, divided. Despite that, Franck's only mature symphony entered the international orchestral repertoire. This newly-engraved edition by Clinton Nieweg and Jennifer Johnson address major disparities between the original score and parts. It also transposes the trumpets from F to Bb, the cornets sections in A to Bb, moves the bass clarinet from bass clef to Bb treble clef, and includes bass clef parts for the trombones in addition to the tenor clef parts. | 1705 | 1800176B-751B-4885-8601-16D5BE0FC7E9 | B371 | Songs for Sight Singing Vol. 1: HS/ TB | SONGS FOR SIGHT SINGING provides a collection of literature for use in the choral classroom. Each selection was composed according to the criteria designed by Texas choral directors and commissioned by the Texas University Interscholastic League for use in its annual sight singing contest. These graded materials were created specifically for young musicians by recognized composers and comprise a valuable resource as they contain many of the problems encountered in sight singing. This collection can be used effectively as a supplement to the daily instructional sight singing program after an approved system (movable “do”, fixed “do” or numbers) and a rhythm system are established within the choral curriculum. | Tb | |
| 1706 | 180342BC-70FC-4271-A0B1-0C128EA401D0 | A819902 | Die Walkuere, WWV 86B: Act III, Sc. 1: Ride of the Valkyries (Ritt der Walkuren, concert arrangement) | The Ride of the Valkyries refers to the beginning of act 3 of Die Walküre, the second of the four operas constituting Richard Wagner's (1813-1883) Der Ring des Nibelungen. As a separate piece, the "Ride" is often heard in a purely instrumental version, such as in this concert arrangement by Wouter Hutschenruyter (1859-1943). Together with the Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin, the Ride of the Valkyries is one of Wagner's best-known pieces. The main theme of the Ride, the leitmotif labelled Walkürenritt, was first written down by the composer on 23 July 1851. The preliminary draft for the "Ride" was composed in 1854 as part of the composition of the entire opera, which was fully orchestrated by the end of March 1856. | 1712 | 1809C324-68C3-4455-BC96-CA4CC81B28B4 | A775002 | Sinfonia No. 10: String Symphony in B minor | This is the tenth among thirteen string symphonies written between 1821 and 1823, when Mendelssohn was twelve to fourteen years old. Like the other twelve, it was written as a tribute to early Classical symphonies by composers such as Haydn, J.C. Bach, C.P.E. Bach, and Mozart, a feature much more obvious in the first six as they were more imitative. The second grouping, starting with Sinfonia No. 7, show more of the composer's emerging personal style. Mendelssohn composed most of the thirteen string symphonies in three movements, but all that remains of his tenth is a single movement. Historians are unsure whether the work was meant to be a single or multi-movement work. Mendelssohn composed this piece with two separate viola parts. Instrumentation: String Orchestra (2 viola parts) (8-8-[3-3]-5-5 in set). | String Orchestra (2 viola parts) (8-8-[3-3]-5-5 in set) | |
