| 1773 | 18D11FD3-4E7F-4152-A050-02A95338701E | X504100 | Annees de pelerinage: Italie | Annees de pelerinage: Italie (Years of Pilgrimage: Italy) derives its title from the set of three suites for piano by Franz Liszt in which he musically portrays the "strongest sensations and most lively impressions" created by his travels to Italy and Switzerland during the period 1835-39. In this composition, each of the four movements "explores" a particular Italian city or region through, in part, the eyes of other composers who (like Liszt) were inspired to write works based on their own sojourns in the country. There are references, both literal and oblique, to music by Berlioz, Tchaikovsky and Liszt (with a sly wink from Paganini). Serious and playful elements combine in the piece, with the two inner movements (II. Venezia e Napoli and III. Firenze) providing light-hearted foils to the more somber outer movements (I. Roma and IV. Abruzzo). | String Quartet | |
| 1774 | 18D4F9AB-3EDD-4258-BC83-607A171B8A97 | 50250192 | Samba for a Sunday Afternoon for String Orchestra with Latin Percussion | Take your students on an auditory trip to the streets of Brazil with this challenging samba from Thom Sharp. Written for string orchestra, drum set, and Caxixi (a large gourd shaker), Samba for a Sunday Afternoon provides the perfect opportunity to incorporate your school’s percussion students into your string program. Every section gets a shot at the melody supported by the rhythmic intricacies and contemporary harmonies found in the music of Brazil. Don’t be surprised to see your audience gently swaying in their seats or creating an impromptu samba line as your students play this dance-worthy Grade 4 samba. (Bonus idea: If your school has an active percussion ensemble, you could incorporate a whole samba drum line in place of the drum set!) | String Orchestra | |
