Marked with the opening words of Isaiah 45:8: Rorate coeli (Heavenly Dew Drops), the fugue adapts the opening musical phrase of the antiphon (chant) on this text for its subject. It thereby gives expression to the longing of the biblical patriarchs and prophets for the coming of righteousness through the advent of the Messiah. The fugue climaxes in measures 41-42, where violins and violas descend with sequential repetitions of the subject’s only major third, itself descending. | String Orchestra

| 17127 | F9B16FC6-E257-4C5B-A3F9-68151FEEA52B | S935CB | El Muro: The Wall | Made up of tightly woven riffs, El Muro suggests a variety of Latin American musical styles, from the Colombian cumbia, Peruvian huayno, Mexican son, and the Cuban montuno. Venezuelan-born composer Ricardo Lorenz personalizes these styles, incorporating them seamlessly without compromising the underlying musical logic of his work. Conceptually, the piece challenges the notion of both physical and imaginary walls which divide and oppress people. The resulting drama that plays out in the piece portrays these rich musical traditions confronting "the wall." | 4(3dPicc).3(3dEH).2+Eb Cl,BCl.2+Cbsn: SATB Saxes: 6.4(C Tpts).3.2 Euph.1: Timp(5 drums).Perc(4).Grand Pno. | 17130 | f9b93d6c-9e3b-11f0-a418-0022482c9682 | SO214C | Finale from Symphony in D Major, W. 27 | Tripartite sinfonias of this era were stylistically akin to the Italian opera overtures first heard in the 17th Century. The typical format was for a lively allegro, followed by a lyrical slow section, and then a rousing finale, most often in rondo form. This work certainly conforms to this formula. Originally for pairs of oboes, bassoons, horns, trumpets, and timpani, the adaptation for strings was rather easy, as only the brass and timpani parts deviate - and only slightly - from the melodic and harmonic elements. The work was originally published in 1782 after Bach’s death in a composite score as Six Grand Overtures. | String Orchestra | |

| 17132 | f9ccd1fe-9e3b-11f0-a418-0022482c9682 | SO215C | Scherzo from String Quintet, D. 956 | The String Quintet in C major (D.956, Op. Posth. 163) is Schubert’s final chamber work. It is sometimes called the Cello Quintet because unlike the standard string quintet, which includes an extra viola, this work adds an extra cello. Completed just two months prior to the composer’s death, it did not receive its first performance until 1850. The third movement Scherzo – itself close to eleven minutes in length – comprises two large sections, with a repeat of the first section to create a “fast-slow-fast” format. This version for advanced string orchestra condenses the performance time to about five minutes while retaining all the essential melodic mastery of Schubert. | String Orchestra | |

Your cellos and basses will love the driving rhythmic accompaniment while the violins and violas wail on the catchy blues melody! | String Orchestra

The opera was a type of "opera-ballet" with the story taking place in exotic locales- in this case the Gallant Indies. In addition to being a prolific composer, Rameau was also an important music theorist of his time. | String Orchestra

In 1906 Zimmerman composed "March for the Graduating Class of 1907" which was premiered at a concert the night prior to that year's game. The band repeated the lively melodic march the next day before the football game, and many observers maintained it was the catalyst for the Navy's great victory over the Army's team that fall. Later that year, the title was changed to "Anchors Aweigh" after words were added to the wonderful trio. The song was later adopted as the official song of the US Navy. This setting commissioned by the United States Naval Academy Band, Lt. Commander Melvin Kessler, conductor. | Concert Band
