17061F8B1F3D4-E74E-47B5-BB41-3B1B3A3D2257SO189CReel MusicReel Music for strings uses three old Irish jigs as material for each of the movements. Movement I is based on the Swallowtail Jig. This jig is also known by the alternate title of The Dancing Master, which may possibly refer to the type of coat with tails typically worn by early 19th century dancing masters. Movement II, based on Cooley's Reel, is a traditional Irish tune associated with the accordion player Joe Cooley. In his arrangement, it is played in a slow tempo and it serves as a contrast between the faster first and third movements. Movement III is based on The Devil's Dream also known as The Devil Among the Tailors, an old fiddle tune popular in England as early as 1805 and New England in the 1830s.String Orchestra

17063F8B84FEB-AA39-4EC9-8DD2-E294B8931C66S853CBAt the MoviesFrom the 1915 program note that appeared with the first published edition: "The 'Scenarios for Cinematographers' constitute an effort on [Sousa's] part through music, to elucidate the cinematographer what is usually done by the written word. The opening number, 'The Serenaders' depicts that happy period in the college student's life when he delights in serenading the girl students in a neighborhood university. The happiness and care-free existence of 'The Serenaders' is duly reflected in the music of this number, farily bubbling over with gaiety and joyous spirit. […] The second number essays the harrowing story of 'The Crafty Villian and the Timid Maid.' The timid maid's pleading and the crafty villains's bombast being in evidence throughout the number. The third is a dance on the Village Green - the very name 'Balance All and Swing Partners' telling its own story." This edition by Mark Rogers has been revised to better suit the instrumentation of contemporary bands and also to make the 1st movement more accessible to a wider range of players with a move to a key that allows the soloists a greater chance at success.Concert Band

17069F8CD2BA3-23AA-43BA-A409-B6BF86F44617X511056Love Drunk: Folk Songs Set No. 16BLove Drunk (Folk Songs, Set No. 16B) was commissioned by Thomas Jones and completed in July 2014. This is the sixteenth set of an ongoing cycle of Persian folk songs that Reza Vali has been composing since 1978. The work’s four songs (songs without words) reflect upon different aspects of love. In song No. 1, Longing, the lover is longing for a reunion with the beloved.

Song No. 2, In Memory of a Lost Beloved, is a dialogue, across the dimensions, between the deceased beloved and the grieving lover. The song reflects upon the grief of separation-- in this case, separation by death.

The sensual and the spiritual aspects of love intersect in song No. 3, The Girl from Shiraz. The melodies of the third song are accompanied by quotes from the Christmas carol Silent Night, Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde, and Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time.

The final song No. 4, Love Drunk, describes the intoxicating joy when the lovers meet.

About this piece for woodwind trio, the composer says, "Rarely does one come across a spirit epitomizing the life-affirming qualities we admire, and which possesses a vibrancy of beeing reflecting our ideal of pure and positive energy. One rejoices to discover such a spirit… and even more when it takes the form of cat." Movements: I. Nod's Dream, II. Nod at Play, III. Lament for Nod, IV. Danse Macabre. 17073f8e88ced-9e3b-11f0-a418-0022482c9682SO203CWhite Clouds on a Blue SkyThere is nothing like the beauty of a clear blue sky on a spring or summer day. Lying on a blanket as you look up, whether in soft grass or on a sandy beach, it’s a time to take a deep breath and appreciate how small you are in comparison to everything above you. One might say, however, that a parade of fluffy white clouds floating by is far more interesting and peaceful. Clouds at a higher altitude barely seem to move at all, while clouds nearer to the ground sail past more quickly, all the time changing their relationship to one another as they move. It’s hard not to imagine characters and shapes in the formations. A bear? A dog? A boat? The imagination is sparked... there are WHITE CLOUDS ON A BLUE SKY.String Orchestra

17079f8fb24d4-9e3b-11f0-a418-0022482c9682SO205CIn a MoodStarting with an eight-measure violin solo, this simple but elegant melody weaves its way through the orchestra, providing different sections the opportunity to shine, and play expressively. Written entirely in the key of C with no accidentals, teaching skills include two note slurs, hooked bowing, a few notes in 3rd position in violin 1 part, and expressive playing. Attention to dynamic markings and legato bowing will bring out the best. This piece is a great addition to any concert program and suitable for contest!String Orchestra
