While accomplished and prolific, Guilmant wrote almost exclusively for the organ, including: "Pièces dans différents styles" (18 books); "L'organiste pratique" (12 books); Eighteen "Pièces Nouvelles;" and "L'Organiste liturgique" (10 books). 17114F9895E6D-6C26-426B-99A3-D5AEA2F3AA37A134302Schicksalslied, Op. 54 (Song of Destiny; Song of Fate)Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) completed SCHICKSALSLIED, Op. 54 (also SONG OF DESTINY; SONG OF FATE) in May of 1871, though he began the work in the summer of 1868. The inspiration came while Brahms was visiting his friend Albert Dietrich in Wilhelmshaven in 1868, where he came upon the novel HYPERION by Friedrich Hölderlin in Dietrich's library. Included in the book was the poem "Hyperions Schicksalslied," and Brahms was so taken by the work that he began sketching this choral work that very day while sitting by the sea. The nearly three-year delay was due to the composer's uncertainly in how to finish it. SCHICKSALSLIED is considered among the best of Brahm's major choral works, and the work premiered on October 18, 1871, in Karlsruhe by the Philharmonischen Vereins, Brahms conducting. The opening should be at a relaxed, but fast tempo, (about quarter equals 106). Arranger Bobrowitz likes to be sure that all the instruments get to share important melodic material, so the high strings have it at 9, and the low strings at 17. A smooth transition, staying in tempo, takes us to the second selection Chanukah, Chanukah. Here the melody is passed from the high strings to the low strings and at 55, the pizzicato technique is introduced, giving the melody a new quality. The celli set the return to the final song which is back to arco for all. A relaxed moderate tempo, (quarter equals 78) should help keep the style broad and dramatic. Bar 91, is a reminder of the Chanukah, Chanukah song and serves as a fitting ending for this wonderful new winter selection!String Orchestra

The key to this work is found in its character, which evokes a melancholic sadness, a limpid gracefulness that is perhaps indicative of Bolcom’s enduring feelings for its inspiration, the memory of the composer’s father, Robert Samuel Bolcom. Adapted from his well-known piano composition, this moderate ragtime was arranged by the composer for symphony band. This work utilizes a transparent scoring style along with soloistic passages that contrast nicely with brief soli features for various sections of the ensemble. The lyric quality lends itself quite well to the rhythmic and syncopated style making it both uniquely elegant and rewarding.Concert Band
