Based on E. T. A. Hoffmann’s 1816 short story, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” the original 1892 production, choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov in Saint Petersburg, was not considered a success, although the 20-minute suite extracted by the composer was. Starting in the 1960s, the popularity of the full ballet has grown enormously, with frequent performances every Christmas season among the major ballet companies. The “Final Waltz and Apotheosis” is the final dance by all of the sweets in the Land of Sweets as Clara and Prince exit. Each of the six movements recreates a traditional Spanish dance or evokes Spanish folk music. Canción Catalan, 3. Tango. Reprint edition. | Violin and Piano
| 17026 | F82EAAC8-F546-48BD-88AF-0EC4846EF5E2 | A804990 | Straussiana, Op. 21 | Child prodigy Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957) composed his final work Straussiana in 1953. Asked to write two short pieces for secondary school orchestras, Korngold chose to adapt the music of a composer he had adapted many times in the past, Johann Strauss II, the Waltz King. Rather than select the most familiar Strauss tunes, he chose sparkling pieces from lesser-known operettas, such as Ritter Pazman, Cagliostro in Wien, and Fürstin Ninetta and, reviving interest in these Strauss works. Following delivery for the secondary school orchestras, Korngold's final contribution was to create a brilliant orchestration for symphony orchestras. Movements: I. Polka, II. Mazurka, III. Waltz. | 17029 | f833c274-9e39-11f0-a418-0022482c9682 | A675002 | Larghetto for Horn and Orchestra | Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894), the French lawyer-turned-self-taught-composer wrote his LARGHETTO for Horn in 1875. Resembling an opera aria for French Horn, the work is very lyrical and achingly expressive, calling to mind a lament sung by an alto or tenor. The work was first performed on May 5, 1877, in Paris at Salle Pleyel, with Jean-Henri Garigue playing horn and accompanied by the orchestra of the Société nationale de musique. The work was not published in Chabrier's lifetime, however, and it was only rediscovered amongst his possessions after he passed. Following the example of his renowned father, Karl gained wide recognition as a violinist, violist, and composer. Noted primarily as an orchestral composer, his Four Divertimenti for two clarinets, two horns, and two bassoons are among the few chamber pieces that have not been lost as a result of the bombing of the Berlin Public Library during World War II. These editions by Harry H. Hall have been meticulously researched, documented, and edited to bring this music back to the public. All Four Divertimenti are available from the publisher. | Woodwind Sextet | |

The wassail - the blessing of the trees and animals - most likely developed from winter rituals hopefully guaranteeing the return of spring growth and summer abundance. ‘Gutsy’ playing is needed! | String Orchestra

| 17038 | f8620d07-9e3b-11f0-a418-0022482c9682 | SO197C | Overture to Belshazzar | Though in 1744 Handel presented the oratorio BELSHAZZAR as an oratorio, or religious work, it was later staged many times operatically. The opening should be neither too slow or too fast, and perhaps maybe thought of as an introductory fanfare for strings. (The original included oboes.) For better attack, bowing marked in the score as ‘hooked’ may rather be played separately and nearer the frog, but this might require greater technical ability. | String Orchestra | |
