16921F6BF3933-4781-44F5-A19B-6B8821ABB4E1A934290Iberia, Suite for Orchestra, No. 1: EvocationIBERIA was originally a suite for piano composed by Isaac Albéniz (1860 – 1909) between 1905 to 1909, published in four books comprised of 3 movements each. Albéniz wrote these in an impressionistic style to evoke Spain. After Albéniz attempted to arrange the pieces for orchestra, he became impatient and enlisted his friend and conductor Enrique Fernández Arbós to do the arrangement. Arbós arranged five of the pieces: Evocation (Evocación), Fête-dieu à Séville, Triana, El Puerto and El Albaicín. Evocation combines elements of the southern Spanish fandango and the northern Spanish jota song forms. It is one of three that were recorded by Arbós in 1928. You know, when the alarm didn't go off, the coffee pot broke, the car wouldn't start, your office key broke off in the lock, your favorite baton snapped with no cause, and both baritone saxophones developed pad leaks…and then the day got worse? This work is about that day, when it seemed like you were under attack from every object in the room. This can be performed with as few as four percussionists (or as many as thirteen).Concert Band

The composition was dedicated to Standard Oil heiress Ann Archbold, who kindly housed the Babins in her Hillandale mansion in Washington, D.C., near Georgetown University. The work was subtitled "Eight Waltz Movements Composed on a Theme by Johann N. Hummel." Hummel used this melody twice in both a piano duet and a work for oboe and orchestra. The Babins were very familiar with the former piece, having frequently performed it. In addition to the edition for clarinet and piano, which is also available from the publsher, American clarinetist Dennis Nygren has also arranged this edition of "Hillandale Waltzes" for solo clarinet, 16 winds, double bass, and percussion.Clarinet and Band

In a letter to his father, he referred to his VIOLIN CONCERTO No. 3 in G major, K. 216, as the "Straßburg-Concert”, and cheerfully described performing it at the Heiligkreuz Monastery, receiving praise from those who attended the informal concert. In the first movement, he borrows a tune from his newest opera IL RE PASTORE. Following a gentle, poised slow movement, the finale captures the stamina of a gypsy peasant dance. 16935F6DAD6B0-E3B5-47BF-8F13-2E311CD2B396M372691Sonatine, M. 40Encouraged by a friend, Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) wrote the 1st movement of his Sonatine for piano, M. 40, for a competition sponsored by the Weekly Critical Review magazine. The competition was later cancelled because the magazine had nearly fallen into bankruptcy, but by 1905, Ravel had added two more movements. Paule de Lestang gave the first performance on March 10, 1906, in Lyon. Notwithstanding an early dedication of the work to his teacher Gabriel Faure, Ravel later settled on his close friends Ida and Cipa Godebski. The work has been considered favorably by audiences and performers, and it was a work that Ravel continued to value, frequently performing it himself, though he chose to leave out the final movement due to its technical complexity. Movements: I. Modéré (F-sharp minor); II. Mouvement de menuet (D-flat major); III. Animé (F-sharp minor). This edition by Richard Dowling adds fingerings, suggests redistribution of notes between the hands to make certain complicated passages easier to play, added some additional pedaling suggestions, and adds some phrasing and articulation markings to recurring phrases for the sake of consistency.Solo Piano

16937F6E3BB74-842B-4C05-8742-EBC6405474AAS139CBSecond Suite for BandThe Second Suite for Band was written in 1961 for the Camden, Arkansas, High School band. It is in three movements, each designated to express a form of physical motion, as in Gigue, Dirge and Entry. The Gigue should be performed in a joyous mood of the dance, with the Dirge in the somber contrast of a funeral march. The Entry should be approached as any ceremonial processional.Concert Band
