Program NotesWith Courage and Compassion (A Salute to First Responders) was written in 2003 on commission from the Carson City Symphony for the twentieth anniversary season. The work is a very personal response to the tragedy of September 11th. Part of that response is a renewed sense of gratitude for the work of First Responders in every community. For my composition, I chose not to look back at the gray billowing clouds streaming through the streets of Manhattan. I chose not to write music of despair, but rather music of hope--and defiance. With Courage and Compassion is a life-affirming work. It celebrates the lives of those heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice on that day. But it also celebrates all First Responders in all communities who place their lives on the line each and every day. It is to First Responders everywhere that this work is dedicated. --Bruce Craig Roter
