| 16982 | F7874F5D-28EE-4343-ABC1-7FE01F42C140 | 52250470 | Power Surge | Light up your middle school orchestra with this powerful piece in E minor. A vigorous theme with repeated sixteenth notes and pizzicato low-string accompaniment begins the work. Crisp dotted rhythms reinforce hooked bowing skills. The B theme is slower, more lyrical, uses two-note slurs, and allows for the presentation of contrasting styles. | String Orchestra | |
| 16983 | F78AA166-6063-4EB5-B882-D5551BD5C7CF | A241902 | Concerto for Piano No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18 | Written between the autumn of 1900 and April 1901, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Concerto for Piano No. 2 remains one of the composer’s most enduringly popular pieces and cemented his reputation as composer of concerti. It also served as confirmation of the end of Rachmaninoff’s three-year bout with clinical depression and writer’s block that stemmed, in part, from the poor reception by critics of his first symphony in 1897. This edition for two pianos, four hands was arranged by Sergei Rachmaninoff. The books are spiral-bound so that each of the two copies needed to rehearse or perform lay flat. The score and orchestral parts for this work are available from E.F. Kalmus as item A241902. Reprint edition. | Solo Piano: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp.Perc: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set) | |

Composed sometime between 1790 – 1792 for solo bass voice and ensemble, it may have been written with German actor and operatic bass Joseph Lux in mind, as the two were members of a group traveling together to Mergentheim, Germany in September and October of 1791. The text wittily discusses the contradictions of a wise mother’s advice on kissing (“Kissing, kissing, child is a sin!”) and the son’s contrary views (“Well, I poor sinner, think it cannot be laid aside.”) Instrumentation: 1.2.0.0: 2.0.0.0: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Solo Bass (available separately). | 1.2.0.0: 2.0.0.0: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Solo Bass

As might be expected, the low instruments of the band, particularly the tubas, have much of the melodic material, making this a refreshing change in programming. | Concert Band

| 16990 | F7A7C5F2-7EBE-4883-91E1-501FB3554F57 | SU573 | On Wings of Song: Concerto for Piccolo and Orchestra or Wind Ensemble (reduction) | Mendelssohn’s classic art song, "On Wings of Song," set to the poetry to Heinrich Heine, provided the inspiration for the music. The sublime melody has become part of the repertory of musicians of every type--flutists perform the vocal line with the original piano accompaniment, pianists perform Liszt’s transcription for solo piano, and violinists play Heifitz’s setting for violin and piano. The text of Heine’s love poem describes the power of melody to transport a pair of lovers to a magical garden. This sense of music soaring through the skies made a wonderful image, and is so appropriate to the soaring nature of the piccolo. The piece was written for and dedicated to piccoloist Jan Gippo. Orchestra, wind ensemble and piano accompaniments all available from the publisher. (2010) ca. 20' | Piccolo, Piano | |

There are a variety of ways of perceiving time that are challenged in the course of the piece. Work for mixed ensemble of 18 players. Composed for and premiered by the Indiana University New Music Ensemble. | Flute, (d Piccolo), Oboe (d English Horn), Bb Clarinet, Eb Alto Saxophone, Bassoon, Horn in F, Trumpet in C, Trombone, Tuba, 2 Percussionists, Harp, Piano (d Celesta), 2 Violins, Viola, Cello, Contrabass

This arrangement by trumpeter Chris Gekker for trumpet and piano includes both a C and Bb trumpet part. (2002) Ca. 9' | Trumpet, Piano
| 16995 | F7B814F4-173A-41C2-8203-5010EF81D6F7 | 20504216 | Sunday in the Country | This is the short story of activities that take place in a rural setting on a summer Sunday afternoon. Families attend a morning worship service and then share in social and recreational activity at a picnic. "In Church" is slow and in a reverent legato style. "At a Picnic" is different from the opening, with light articulations and syncopation. This short work is a perfect outlet for a group of players wanting to enjoy their first brass quartet experience, and both the horn and trombone parts have euphonium parts in both treble and bass clefs to give some additional flexibility to the instrumentation. | Bb Trumpet 1 and 2, F Horn (Trombone), Trombone (Euphonium) and Tuba | |

| 16998 | F7CE8A1D-A352-478C-BAA3-5BD13E6F56C3 | A129502 | Norma: Overture (Sinfonia) | Norma is a two-act lyric tragedy by Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835). A leading example of the bel canto genre, the opera premiered at La Scala in Milan on December 26th, 1831. The story tells of a love triangle between Norma, the High priestess of the druids, her Roman lover, and a younger priestess for whom the Roman has fallen. The overture to the opera, for which the composer reserved the then old-fashioned term "Sinfonia", nevertheless performs the role of a modern overture in that it introduces themes later heard in the opera. | 16999 | f7d545a8-9e39-11f0-a418-0022482c9682 | A673490 | Away in a Manger for Harp, String Orchestra, and Chorus | The beautiful Christmas carol AWAY IN A MANGER has long been thought to be the work of the German reformer of religion, Martin Luther, though the text is now believed to have originated in America. While a setting of the text to music by William J. Kirkpatrick is also commonly heard, the setting by American hymnist James Ramsey Murray, first published in his 1887 collection Dainty Songs for Little Lads and Lasses as LUTHER'S CRADLE HYMN, remains the most popular. It is from this publication that the attribution to Martin Luther comes, and an additional spurious attribution to a "Carl Mueller" in 1914 created further confusion, with the melody itself sometimes called "Mueller." Murray's authorship is now fairly established. This arrangement by Arthur Harris is for mixed chorus, harp and string orchestra, and a version for boys' choir and orchestra (A7913) is also available from the publisher. Instrumentation: Hp. Str (8-8-5-5-5 in set): Mixed Chorus (SATB). | Hp. Str (8-8-5-5-5 in set): Mixed Chorus (SATB) | |
