While what would later be considered the fourth in the series was likely written first, the other three were composed in the same order as their corresponding number. Being chamber works, Martin? found great difficulty in seeing them published. SERENATA No. 4, H. 215 (also DIVERTIMENTO; SERENÁDA; or SERENADE) is the only one of the four in the cycle that is written for an orchestra, albeit a small one. The story depicts the life of the titular Onegin, a Russian dandy who does not understand himself, his emotions, or the value of life, leading him to reject an impassioned declaration of love by a woman he looks down upon and instead pursue the fiancée of his friend, who he kills in a duel as a result of this pursuit. The provincial WALTZ, brought here to a higher level of sophistication by Tchaikovsky, is performed at the ball honoring Tatyana's name day at the beginning of Act II. This orchestral work has found a popular home on the concert stage and outside the full opera. Instrumentation: 3(2nd d. Picc,3rd opt).2.2.2:4.2.3.0: Timp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set). | 3(2nd d. Compositionally, he is best known for three sets of 42 concerti grossi (a term made famous by Corelli): Opus 2 (1732), Opus 3 (1733) and Opus 7 (1746). These were written for an English audience excited by the 'Corellian' style, despite the rest of Europe then adopting the fashionable galant style. These concerti grossi proved very popular on performance and were published quickly in London. The collection of Six Concertos (Concerti Grossi), Op. 2 were written first in 1732, but were revised by Geminiani in 1755. This edition of Concerto Grosso in D minor, Op. 2, No. 5 has been edited by Hans Joachim Moser, and it features combined ripieno and concertante string parts (4-4-3-3-3* in the set) into each instrument part and a realized cembalo/harpsichord continuo. (*The bass was included in the work, but extra violoncello parts are included should orchestras wish to have basses double the cello.) | (Ripieno/Concertante parts combined): Str (4-4-3-3-3* in set): Concertante: Vn(2).Va.Vc: Hpchd in set (*The bass was included in the work, but extra violoncello parts are included should orchestras wish to have basses double the cello.) | |
