This composition by George Gates takes three Mexican songs and arranges them for symphonic band. The first song/movement. "Alma Llanera," originally from Venezuela, had become a popular, traditional favorite of the marimba bands of the Tehuantepec region of southern Mexico. The second song, "Azteca (Subo Subo)," is an Aztec lament from the pre-Hispanic period. The final song, "Huapango (De Veracruz)," is a folk dance form native to the Veracruz region.
