L'isle Inconnue (transposed in E) | The song cycle LES NUITS D’ETE (SUMMER NIGHTS) is a setting of six poems by composer Hector Berlioz' (1803-1869) neighbor and friend, Théophile Gautier. The text deals in themes of love in all its facets, progressing from youthful innocence to loss and renewal. Originally composed in 1841 for solo vocalist and piano, Berlioz completed orchestration of each of the six songs in 1856. While regrettably neglected for many years, this song cycle was rediscovered in the 20th century and has become one of the composer's most popular works. The songs in the original keys (1. A; 2. B; 3. F minor; 4. F-sharp; 5. D; 6. F) are available from the publisher both as a complete set (A2573) and individually. Robert Sutherland has edited five of the songs in the cycle and has transposed each in multiple keys to expand the work to more vocalists. Songs completed by Robert Sutherland: 1. Villanelle (E, F, and G), 4. Absence (Db, D, Eb, and E), 5. Au Cimetie?re, Clair de lune (Bb, B, and C), and 6. L'lle inconnue (D, Eb, and E). A transposition of 2. Le Spectre de la rose to D and a transposition of 3. Sur les Lagunes to g minor is also available from the publisher. L'île inconnue (The Unknown Island) asks for the unattainable, a place where love is eternal. Instrumentation: 2.1.2.2: 3.0.0.0: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Voice (high voice). | 17092 | F92AFE2A-65D9-4E1C-8C59-3F81C6328B12 | 10100264 | Funeral March | Written in 1866 the day he heard his good friend and Norwegian nationalist Rikard Nordraak died, the original monument to the memory of his dear friend was composed by Edvard Grieg for piano. One year later, Grieg arranged the work for military band, transposing it to g minor, and he so treasured this music that he carried it with him on all journeys, and the orchestra setting was played at his interment. This transcription for the contemporary wind ensemble was made, appropriately, by the Norwegian band enthusiast and authority Jan Ericksen and edited by famed band master Frederick Fennell. | Symphonic Band

While what would later be considered the fourth in the series was likely written first, the other three were composed in the same order as their corresponding number. Being chamber works, Martin? found great difficulty in seeing them published. SERENATA No. 3, H. 218 (also SERENÁDA or SERENADE) premiered on January 29, 1940, in Prague. | 17095 | f9351b29-9e3b-11f0-a418-0022482c9682 | SO208C | Human Enigma | This is a piece that has seen several iterations, originally composed for the Trance genre, then modified for string quartet and finally string orchestra. I was inspired by how human beings solve complex problems. Multiple thought processes occur at the same time, all independent, or sparked off each other. The individual may dwell on these patterns for a while until finally, a single voice emerges. This is the decision or the solution to the problem we seek. Human beings are amazing and will never cease to amaze me. In short, the human being is an enigma. | String Orchestra
