Full of lush chromaticism, the work melds together Delius' ethereal style with Warlock's more angular sound. Delius, blind from syphilis, dictated his gratitude for the work: "My dear Phil, Forgive me for not answering your kind letter of congratulations and acknowledging your charming serenade, which I received early in the morning on my birthday to my greatest surprise and pleasure. I like it very much indeed; it is a very delicate composition of a fine harmonist...Percy Grainger and Alexander Lippay played me the Serenade several times from the score and they all liked it." A string count of 8-8-5-5-5 is included in the set. | String Orchestra (8-8-5-5-5 in set) | |

Originally titled WALLACHIAN DANCES after the Moravian Wallachia region, Janá?ek later changed the title when the region's name also changed, since it reflects folk songs from that specific area. Composing the collection between 1888-1890, the original version saw its premiere on January 11, 1889, in Olomouc, although Janá?ek began to rework the title in 1925, making a new selection and ordering of numbers, along with changes in orchestration. This revised version was published in 1928 and is what is used in this E.F. Kalmus edition. Movements: 1. Starodávný ("the Ancient One"); 2. Požehnaný ("the Blessed"). Bartók’s influences are on display in these pieces, including that of Debussy in the first movement PRELUDIO, and Beethoven’s NINTH SYMPHONY in the Scherzo. FOUR ORCHESTRAL PIECES is considered a bridge stylistically between Bartók’s early works like DUKE BLUEBEARD'S CASTLE and his mature works like THE MIRACULOUS MANDARIN.
